Chapter 40

Chapter Forty

Midas

I jump in my truck, not bothering to take off my cut as Kruger heads for his bike. I floor it, not giving a fuck if the cops catch me. How the hell did it come to this? And Kiki? I still can’t get my head around what’s going on.

Thankfully, the roads are quiet, but Delphi must be doing some speed herself because we don’t catch up to her like I hoped we would.

We reach the pull-off. I slam my foot on the brakes when I spot Delphi’s car, and dive out.

Kruger barely misses me as he swerves, almost laying down his bike.

I run, leaving him to catch up. Before I can lay eyes on the woman, a loud explosion rips through the air, throwing me backward.

My head slams against the ground, ripping a groan from me, my ears ringing loudly.

It takes me a while to orient myself. When I do, I see Kruger dive past me.

I get to my feet, swaying when I see Kruger on his knees with Delphi on the ground in front of him.

I run over, dropping down next to them as he starts CPR.

The blast must have thrown her too. Only it looks like she hit a rock or something because half her face is covered in blood. She has a gash so deep on her forehead I swear I can see bone.

“Come on, Delphi, breathe for me,” Kruger begs as I tip my head back, pinch her nose, and breathe for her. I hear sirens in the distance. Legs would have told them to come. I just pray they make it in time.

We don’t stop. We keep breathing for her, and Kruger keeps doing compressions, even when we hear her bones crunch under his hands. I ignore his anguished pleas and will her to hold on.

“Come on, Delphi, you have to hold on. Your niece is going to love you. And what about Legs? Are you really going to leave her to deal with me alone? Are you that mean?”

Still nothing, but I can see an ambulance pulling in, along with a couple of police cars.

When the paramedics arrive, I move back.

Kruger refuses to stop until I have to drag him away.

I hold him back as they shock her, trying to get her heart started.

All the while, Kruger calls her name, begging her to stay with him.

My legs almost buckle underneath me when the paramedics yell they’ve found a rhythm. It’s chaos after that as they hurry her to the ambulance and blue light her all the way to the hospital. Kruger dives on his bike and follows before anyone can stop him, leaving me to deal with the police.

I ride to the station with them and find my lawyer waiting there for me. “Havoc called. He wanted me to tell you he’s got Legs, so don’t worry.”

I relax a little. Havoc will keep her safe. I need to see her, touch her, even if only to remind myself that she’s okay. Seeing her with that grenade in her hand nearly killed me. If it had gone off and I’d lost her, I’d have followed her to the grave.

I go over what happened with the cops for what feels like a million times before they tell me I’m free to go. I head to the clubhouse, calling Kruger on the way.

“She’s still in surgery. She has a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain. That’s all I know right now.” He hangs up before I can ask anything else.

I pull through the gates before sprinting up to the saloon, where everyone seems to have gathered. As soon as I spot Legs, calm washes over me. When she sees me, she starts running, diving for me once she’s close enough, trusting me to catch her.

And I do. I’ll always catch her.

“You stupid, stupid man.” She kisses me long and hard before pulling back. “I love you. Don’t you ever try to take yourself away from us again.”

I press my forehead to hers. “I promise.”

“Delphi?” she whispers.

I ease her down and tug her to me as others gather around. “Brace yourself, baby. It’s bad.” She nods, biting her lip. “She has a fractured skull and a brain bleed. She’s in surgery right now. I know at least one of her arms are broken from the angle it was at.”

She buries her head against my chest and cries into my T-shirt.

“Things go okay with the police?” Havoc questions.

“Yeah, they might call me back, and they want to talk to Kruger and Del when she wakes up. But for now, it’s good. Did they question Legs?”

“Yeah, I was with her the whole time though.”

I nod before I remember the prospect. “Powers?”

“Awake and pissed. He has a concussion, but he’ll live. He was pistol-whipped on the back of the head while he was on the phone. He’s blaming himself.”

“Nothing he could have done, so tell him to stop with that bullshit. Delphi wasn’t going to risk Legs for anyone.”

I look around the room and see most people are here. “Legs fill you in on what happened?”

“Yeah. Fucking Kiki. It was smart crashing her car like that. It made us look at her as a victim instead of a suspect,” G grunts.

“How the fuck did she hide how nuts she was?”

“I’m not sure she did. Us girls knew she wasn’t quite right in the head, but then neither are half the brothers,” Nevaeh admits. “I think you guys missed it because nobody spends much time getting to know the club girls, beyond Legs and Lil.”

“She admitted she was the one who fucked with my apartment.” Leg turns in my arms as she speaks.

“Wait, she was the one who stole your underwear?” Amity grimaces.

“Maybe to misdirect us. After all, we all naturally assumed it was a man until the poisoning. She pretty much copped to Del’s attack, as well as the club girls.”

“Glad the bitch is dead,” Crane snarls, taking a swig of his beer.

“We need to talk about Delphi. I know some of you were divided, unsure what to believe. But she just saved Legs and me, and might die for her efforts. She didn’t have to do that.

I’d already gotten Legs free from the grenade.

She could have taken her and escaped. She took my place instead,” I hiss, still so fucking pissed at her. And relieved.

“We’ll make amends. I think it’s time I got the full story of what happened from her lips instead of other people’s minds,” Havoc states as Neveah leans into him, smiling.

“I wasn’t here when shit when down, so it’s hard to comment without sounding like a prick.

But I think somewhere along the way, you all fucked up.

I’m not laying blame at anyone’s feet. What you all went through was beyond horrific.

But if I’ve learned anything from what went down with Lola, it’s that there is always more to the story than what’s on the surface. ”

“Agreed,” a somber-looking Mac says before drinking down a full glass of whiskey. It looks like it’s going to be one of those nights.

I smooth the hair back from Legs’s face and tip her chin up.

“Wanna crash here tonight?”

She nods, looking relieved. “I don’t think I can go back there.”

“Then we won’t.”

She nods, thinking I’m talking about tonight, but I’m not. I’ll get a prospect to pack up our shit and bring it over to the new place. Like fuck will I take her anywhere that might cause her any more pain.

I lift my head when I see movement out of the corner of my eye and spot Powers heading our way.

“I’m so fucking sorry, man.”

I yank him in for a quick slap on the back. “Get it out of your head. It happens. There was fuck-all you could do about it anyway.”

“I could have tried—” he starts, but Legs cuts him off.

“You also could have died. Let it go, Powers. I’m just glad you’re okay.”

Hours later, we find ourselves in bed, wrapped up in each other, almost scared to let go, knowing how close we came to losing it all.

I kiss her, my tongue sliding against hers. I pull back and drag my lips down the collar of her throat to the valley between her breasts. She squirms under the onslaught, gasping when I suck a nipple into my mouth and gently nip it with my teeth, making her hiss.

I move down farther, peppering kisses to her belly before I arrive at her slick pussy. I lick her hardened clit and suck it into my mouth, reveling in her soft whimpers. When her legs start to shake, I move up her body and slide my aching cock inside her, not stopping until I bottom out.

I grip her wrists, pin them above her head, and kiss her again, letting her taste herself on my lips as I move inside her. I keep the pace slow and languid, loving her from the inside out with unhurried strokes. I could spend a lifetime worshipping at her altar, and it would never be enough.

When we come, we come together. Even when the aftershocks have passed, I can’t drag myself away.

I roll her away from me and move up behind her, slipping my cock back inside her soaked pussy.

I don’t fuck her, though. This is about connection, nothing more, nothing less.

When she backs up into me, I know she needs it too.

“I love you, Legs. Thank you for not giving up on me.”

“I love you too. Thank you for fighting for us, even when I didn’t have the strength to fight myself.”
