Chapter Twelve

Spencer

I stared down at my phone at the unknown number calling. Sending the call to voicemail, I finished brushing my teeth. If it was important, they would leave a message.

It had been a wild three days, including the fact that my heat ended early. I was pretty sure what that meant. My hand found my flat stomach and I saw myself smiling in the bathroom mirror.

“Everything okay?” Liam strode into the bathroom and wrapped his arms around me from behind, his larger hand covering my smaller one. “Are you doing okay?”

“I am.” I leaned my head back and kissed his chin. “I was just thinking about how my heat didn’t last very long.”

“I know.” Liam rested his head on mine. “I know what that means. Are you okay with that possibility? You do have choices if you need…”

“I made the choice before I let you fuck me.” I closed my eyes. “If what I had was a heat, which I’m pretty sure it was, and it ended quicker than usual, then I am most likely carrying our child. I actually feel a little excited and that sounds insane…”

“It doesn’t. I feel the same way.”

“You do?” I twisted my head to look at his face. “But I live in another state. How will this work?”

“We will figure it out.” Liam rubbed my cheek with his knuckles. “I will visit you; you will visit me. We have a lot to talk about and plan, but it doesn’t have to be done today or even this week. It will all work out.”

My phone sounded, alerting me to a text message. Looking down, I groaned.

Unknown: Spencer, stop being a child. We need to talk about this. I don’t know what Isaac told you, but it was all a misunderstanding. Stop ignoring my calls. I shouldn’t have had to call you from my brother’s phone for the call to go through. Call me. -Alan

“Are you going to call him?” Liam rubbed my shoulders, and I felt some of my tension disperse.

“I don’t want to speak with him.” I looked at my reflection in the mirror and hated that I was pouting, but the sick feeling at the pit of my stomach flared up again at the thought of having to actually speak with my ex. “I texted him it was over. His actions sealed the deal. I just want to move on.”

“Want me to speak with him?”

“No.”

“I think you should at least text him back repeating what you said before. Until he gets the message that you are done. In my experience, men like him don’t give up just because you ignore their messages.”

“I’ll message him, then.” I picked up my phone and typed a quick message to the number my ex-fiancé texted me from.

Me: Alan, leave me alone. We are done. I told you in my last message. You didn’t answer when I called you before and now I don’t want to hear from you. Issac volunteered to bring you any items you left at my apartment. And if you feel like it, give him my things that I left at yours. Otherwise trash them. I don’t care at this point. I just want the chapter of my life that had you in it to be over for good. Even if you didn’t sleep with your best friend behind my back, you have treated me like utter shit the last couple months, perhaps years. I am finally able to see that. The storm causing me to be stuck here and miss our wedding was the absolute best thing that could have happened. Take this chance to evaluate yourself and how you treat those you supposedly love so that the next person who falls for you is treated right. Either way, it won’t be me. So let go and move on. Have the life you deserve. Goodbye.

“Feel better?” Liam kissed my cheek.

“I do, actually. I hate how emotional I get when I speak, I wouldn’t have been able to say all that without tears and then he would have used that as a chance to try to silence me, to play me, and make me think I am being overdramatic. Typing it all out, I got a chance to tell him everything I felt and then walk away.”

“Are you going to block that number now?” Liam nodded down to my phone that had popped up with a reply.

“Not yet.” I scanned the message and saw that it was just more of the same old lies and tricks Alan had always tried to pull when we fought. Pin all the blame on me or other people. “He is responding. I will let him say his peace. But then block him probably tonight. I’m not sure why but I think I need to keep it open for now. At least until I find out Issac gave him his things.”

“Let’s call Isaac and have him drop all that off if he hasn’t already.” Liam pulled out his phone and dialed his brother, placing it on the counter on the speakerphone so we both could hear.

“What’s up?” Isaac sounded awake and cheerful. I didn’t want to ruin his mood, but he had offered.

“You still up for giving Alan all his things? I would love for you to do that today so I can get him to leave me alone.” Anxiety burned my stomach thinking my best friend would have to face Alan, but I knew Isaac could handle himself.

“Sure thing.” Isaac chuckled. “I already stopped by your place and got everything of his out of it. I was heading for some coffee before dropping it off by him. He won’t answer my calls, but Benny did and Alan’s at his house.”

“Figures.” I shook my head and sighed. “I was so stupid to be with him. How did I not see him for who and what he truly is? He’s blowing up my phone from his brother’s phone he claims, telling me you are a liar and that I need to come back to him. But he’s at Benny’s house as we speak.”

“Good thing you don’t need to deal with him anymore. Let me and my brother handle it all for you.” Isaac swore at some car that cut him off. “Sorry, some dick doesn’t know how to drive. Anyway, I will drop this off to him at Benny’s, and demand he get whatever he has of yours back to me by the end of this week. Then see you when you get back out here. Are you both coming out here to pack up your apartment?”

“What do you mean? Why would I pack up my apartment? I still have several months on my lease.”

“Oh, I don’t know. Could it be because you’re my brother’s fated mate and I just figured you would give up the apartment and crappy job you hate for him.”

“I don’t hate my job. And that apartment is nice, you always said so.”

“It is. But Liam’s cabin is amazing. And no, you don’t like your job. You like the paycheck. Big difference. You don’t need money. Liam—”

“Liam’s money is Liam’s money and mine is mine.” I rolled my eyes. “Listen, we don’t know what we are doing. Okay? We are figuring it out. But for now, I have a job to return to.”

“Hey, it’s you guys in this. I’m just here for support. I love you both and just don’t want anyone unhappy.”

“We are fine, Isaac.” Liam brushed a kiss on my neck and pulled away. “Like Spencer said, we will figure it all out. Even if I have to move to be with him. But for now, we are going to enjoy the last couple days we have together until we must return to the real world. So, we appreciate you doing this for us.”

“Anytime. Okay, well, I’m here at Benny’s. I’ll let you know how it goes. Talk to you soon.” Isaac disconnected the call, and I handed the phone back to Liam.

“Wanna go finish that game of monopoly we started earlier?” Liam’s left cheek dimple appeared then he smiled.

“Yeah. Let’s go.” I checked my messages once more and then pocketed my phone. “Can we also have some of that chili that you made? I could really use some comfort food right now.”

“I got you.” Liam grabbed my hand and led me to the kitchen. “Let’s eat and then play for the rest of the afternoon.”

“Okay if we also squeeze in some cuddles?”

“I thought that was a given.” Liam kissed me and sat me down at the kitchen table. “Whenever we are together, expect lots of cuddles.”

“Oh. Are you going to be my teddy bear?”

“Just don’t ever call me that in front of my brother or sister. Please. I beg you.”

“It’ll be our little secret.”
