CHAPTER 4
SAMAEL
I haven’t held a girl’s hand in more years than I can remember. She’s so tiny, her almost colorless blue eyes expressive as I walk her to class. There are stares of course, but the blasts of dread and fear I send their way help to steer them in another direction.
Lorelei shivers, glancing at me.
“What are you doing?” she asks. “Everyone is giving us a wide berth.”
“I don’t want anyone bumping into you,” I say, shrugging. “I also enjoy scaring people.”
“Like you did at the library,” she remembers. Her glance around us tells me that she must have to worry about being so much shorter than everyone else. Fuck, another thing I’ll be sure to worry about once she’s out of my sight. “Is there a reason why you were there?”
“I feed off fear,” I explain, watching for signs that this will be a deal breaker. There are many things about me that are unfathomable, more so than simply being a demon. “It’s easier to scare people if they’re already in an environment that makes them uneasy.”
“Funny, I was at the library alone because it’s less scary,” she muses.
“Why?” I ask, wondering if this ties into Phenex’s beliefs that her descenting lotion wasn’t working.
“Something weird happened to me yesterday and I stopped feeling safe on campus,” she says. “I went to the chem lab to make something stronger to mask my scent.”
“You’re acting very cagey,” I observe.
“Maybe. Just because you smell like you’re mine doesn’t mean I can trust you,” she says, shrugging.
“It should mean that,” I say, miffed. “I have absolutely no agenda and very few allegiances to others. I don’t need sleep, I don’t eat.”
“Are you trying to tell me you’re housebroken?” she teases.
It takes a second for me to realize what she means before I bark out a laugh. Everyone within earshot jumps around us, but I ignore them. My omega is cute and has a sense of humor, I’m very interested in learning more about her.
“That’s how it sounded, didn’t it?” I say, shaking my head. “No, I’m saying that I am in the very best position to keep you safe, Lorelei.”
I did, after all, watch her sleep all night. I am not a fan of the fact that she sleeps in her closet, though. I can see the faint shadows beneath her eyes, her very face tattling on her for her terrible sleep patterns.
“You said you have Favored Theatrical Plays as your next class?” I ask. “Why is a sophomore taking this?”
She gazes at me for a moment, and I realize she didn’t tell me any of that. Oops.
“I need a literature class, and this somehow straddles the line. If I can bend a rule here and there, I absolutely will,” she says.
The words make me grin because even though I’m a professor and an assistant dean, I thoroughly enjoy bending, breaking, and running the fuck over the rules.
“That’s a very good nugget of information to know,” I murmur. I like the way she shivers depending on my words, and I can smell her arousal even more at times. This must be what Phenex meant. “This thing you made, ah, can you maybe put it on before class?”
Her eyes widen at my words, and I watch her begin to look panicked.
“It’s not terribly apparent,” I say, mollifying her. “Your scent gets stronger the more we talk.”
The blush on her cheeks is delicious. I enjoy knowing that she’s attracted to me, I just don’t want anyone else to know.
“Let’s try this, what did you make?” I ask her.
“It’s a descenting liquid,” she says, her voice lowering. “It works best in a spray bottle, but I don’t have one.”
“I know someone who probably has an empty one laying around, and I have the key to his place,” I say, pulling her down another path to head to Phenex’s apartments.
Lorelei looks around as I walk her into an almost silent building, possibly looking for where everyone is. All the faculty are out teaching or in their apartments. I’m not worried about someone stopping us nor any gossip cropping up because we’re unlikely to get stopped.
“Where are we going?” she asks curiously, but follows me without digging in her heels or tugging her hands away from mine.
She may say that she doesn’t trust me, however, these actions speak volumes.
“A friend’s apartment,” I reply. “This is his place, stay here for a second.”
When I said I had a key, I wasn’t exactly truthful. Disappearing into vapor, I pass under the cracks in the door and solidify on the other side. Unlocking the door, I pull it open to admit her.
“Come in,” I say as if I live here.
“We’re not supposed to be here, are we?” she asks, amused. She walks into the apartment, not appearing alarmed in the slightest.
“Nope, but he won’t care,” I add.
Shutting and locking the door behind her, I begin hunting for a spray bottle. Phenex always seems to have random things in his cleaning supply closet.
“What kind of spray bottle?” I ask. “Is glass alright?”
Finding only glass, I hope it is. I had left her bag on the couch, and I can see Lorelei rifling through it. Hopefully, she’s not planning to tase me or something. I get off of that shit and the interaction will be the start to really hot foreplay.
“It’s perfect,” she says, bringing her glass container full of her descenting liquid.
Unscrewing the sprayer from my bottle, I sniff the bottle to ensure there’s nothing in it.
“Let me wash this just in case,” I decide.
She follows me into the kitchen, looking around as I clean the glass container.
“There’s nothing about the person who lives here,” she mutters.
Phenex isn’t someone who really keeps sentimental mementos. They live in his head and that’s good enough for him. The people I’ve known, many of them are dust in the wind, though my parents are still alive in hell. I’m never going back, which means I don’t plan to take over the family business ever either.
Periodically, they send demon couriers out to deliver messages to me, and I send them back with nightmares as my response. I’m never fucking going back. We all have our pasts, when you’re as old as we are, it’s difficult to escape them. So instead, you keep nothing to remind yourself of it.
I wonder if things will be different with Lorelei. I’m hesitant about many things, and I have questions that are yet to be answered. Pushing her mortality and how fragile she is away, I focus on the current problem.
“I expect a lot of the apartments don’t have mementos and such,” I reply to her, taking her container to pour a little into the spray bottle. I want her to be able to transport the rest properly in her bag which is why I’m not putting it all in. “Should I spray it all over?”
“You’re going to do it?” she asks, blinking at me in surprise.
Ah, this is a girl who is used to being alone. I recognize the signs because I’m the same way. I’d be completely lost without Phenex and this school. They’re the reasons I stay corporeal at all.
“I need to ensure you’re fully covered,” I say gently, screwing the cap on the bottle. “Turn for me.”
I’m not alpha enough to force her to do anything, nor do I want to. My ability to make people fear things is usually enough to get people to do whatever I want, but that’s also not the avenue I want to go in with her. Giving me an odd look she starts to turn for me, and I spray the descenter all over her, including her ass and cunt.
Fuck, she smells too delicious. When she’s standing in front of me, I remember the way she said that her clothing was functional and wonder if money is something she struggles with. Louisiana weather is going to cool off soon, but her feet have to be sweating in her boots, not to mention the tread is shot to hell.
Taking a deep breath to test how much of her scent is hidden, I grunt in satisfaction. I can still smell her, but no one else will be able to.
“Much better,” I say. “I think you just figured out your scent issues, Lorelei. I’ll still be able to smell you, but no one else will.”
I’m not going to mention Phenex since according to him, they didn’t leave on good terms. He can figure his shit out by himself, she’s really not as difficult as he made her out to be.
“Before we head to class, can I ask you a question?” I ask, pointedly glaring at her shoes.
“Is this still about the boots?” Lorelei asks, smirking as she picks up the container holding her descenter.
“Yes,” I groan. “There are so many stairs on this campus. Can I please buy you a pair of suitable shoes?”
“Absolutely not,” she says, rolling her eyes. “These have gotten me through some rough patches. I’m attached to them.”
I’m going to steal them away and take them to a cobbler for new soles, dammit. It’ll be the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever stolen, but fuck it.
While I’m in my mist-like state, whatever I’m holding will come with me. It’s how I’m able to keep things like my keys or cell phone with me. I’m not above using nefarious energy to give my omega nice gifts.
She’s stubborn, and to be honest, I like that. If everything Phenex told me is true, she’s come by it honestly.
“Compromise with me, sweetness. I need to know that if you need to run, you can,” I say seriously.
Even with the efforts we both just went through, I can smell her slick. Fuck me. It’s not as noticeable, but I groan.
“I will chase you whenever you want,” I growl, putting the glass container in her hand on the counter and tugging her to me. “Fuck, I love that you can’t hide what you’re thinking from me in regards to this.”
Her cheeks are bright pink, her pupils blowing out slowly with desire.
“We don’t have the time to do what I want, but I want a taste,” I mutter, my other hand grabbing her ass and lifting her so her legs can wrap around me. My fingers sink into her gorgeous curls, loving how wild they are as it tumbles down her back.
My lips claim hers, her sweetness filling my senses. My tongue can lengthen at my command, but for the purposes of not scaring her, I drag my tongue against hers. Kissing, sucking, pulling her moans and whimpers are going to be one of my favorite new hobbies.
Unfortunately, I’m so focused on her, I fail to hear the door to the apartment open. Phenex’s growl penetrates my groggy senses a bit, but we’re already caught, so fuck him. I’m going to continue to enjoy our girl.
I can share, but it’s even better if he’s forced to watch because he was a dick. I’m surprised she didn’t hold last night against me, but she was also incredibly turned on by the elevator experience. I think she may have a fear kink, which means she truly is made for me.
“Why the fuck are you in my kitchen, Samael?”
“I needed a spray bottle,” I say innocently, tearing my lips from Lorelei’s.
“This is your apartment? You know each other?” she asks, blinking the haze of desire away.
“You made something that’ll keep me from tasting the awful lotion?” Phenex asks, ignoring the questions as he lifts the spray bottle up and sprays it at her ass. “That’s much better.”
God, he’s so damn boorish.
“Phenex and I are friends,” I reply to Lorelei, letting her slide down my body when she wiggles.
“Commenting on my lotion and the way it tastes makes the presumptuous assumption that you’re going to be allowed to kiss me again,” she says, turning to face Phenex.
Fuck yes, tell him off. I’ll hide you when his head explodes.
“I beg your pardon,” he says, laughing. “I plan to kiss you whenever possible, Lorelei. I’m assuming you know that Samael is also your scent match?”
“Yes,” she mutters. “I’m going to be so late to class.”
“It’s in,” Phenex checks his watch, lips pursed, “fifteen minutes. You’ll make it.”
“Stalkers, all of you,” she sighs. “God, why are you like this?”
“Anyone else we need to worry about?” I ask, smirking, ignoring her question.
“No, you’re both more than enough,” she grumbles, picking up her jar. “For the record, I didn’t know this was your apartment, Professor Gorsch.”
“Ugh, please never call me that,” he says, making a face. His stone colored skin ripples with disgust. I find it interesting because he is one of the best poker players I’ve ever seen. Everything he feels shows around her. “Call me Phenex outside of class or Professor. All I could think about was eating out your pussy, drop the Gorsch.”
Hiding my smile by rolling my lips in, I find that I enjoy how pink she gets when she’s shocked by us. We have years of dirty talk to give her, so she should settle in to be permanently rosy everywhere.
“Come on, Lorelei, let’s get going. I’ll let you process all of that on the way,” I tease her, my hand settling on her back.
“Yeah,” she says dazedly, walking with me.
“What did I say?” Phenex asks, trailing behind as we walk.
“I’ve heard you shouldn’t offer a girl oral that you just met, but it’s also all I’ve been thinking about. I’m probably not a good frame of reference,” I say.
“Maybe I should throw the towel in on classes today,” Lorelei groans. “My three pairs of panties are very close to being ruined.”
“Three?” Phenex and I ask, my mind stuttering to a stop.
“Is this because you’re a messy pool of slick for us, Lorelei?” I ask, enjoying her whimper as she shoots an annoyed and frustrated glare at me.
Poor little omega.
“It’s the only way I can attempt to keep any of my scent from leaking out,” she sighs, putting away the jar in her hand carefully. Snagging the handle, I pick up her bag, make sure it’s closed well, and put it on one of my shoulders.
“You look like a very preppy student,” Phenex teases me.
I knew I was going to see her today so I made an effort with my clothes. I’m sure he knows it too. I know he doesn’t mean anything by his comment, so I ignore it. I’m the one who gets to walk Lorelei to class and spend more time with her.
“I do, right up until I become everyone’s nightmare for walking too close to me today,” I say with a dark chuckle.
Gazing at me as I take Lorelei’s hand, he hums under his breath.
“As long as it ensures she doesn’t get trampled,” he says.
“I usually end up in the grass to make sure that doesn’t happen,” she mutters. “I’m too short and I can’t always get around them in time to keep from getting pushed around.”
“That’s yet another nightmare I didn’t need,” Phenex mutters. “I generally don’t care what people think, they’re going to gossip regardless, but I doubt one of us will be able to walk you to all of your classes. Did you really need to take so many?”
“I just added an extra chemistry class,” she says smugly. “It’s not your responsibility to walk me to class. I can handle it just fine. As long as I can get my scent under control, I’m good.”
Giving Phenex a long look that we need to talk later, I tug her gently toward the door. Even then, the poor girl almost trips over her feet because of my strength.
“We have to go,” I remind them. “You can snipe at each other later.”
“Dinner?” Phenex asks absently, checking his schedule on his phone.
“I’m assuming that’s not toward me,” she says. “You two look like you need to gossip together like schoolgirls.”
“While we do gossip, I assure you that it’s in a monstrous and manly manner,” I say, chuckling under my breath.
Phenex cracks a smile, rolling his eyes.
“Yes, that was an invitation for the both of you, Lorelei, unless you have a better offer?” he asks.
“Just a mountain of reading for next week,” she says. “I’m all caught up for this week.”
“It’s only Tuesday,” I remind her, snorting. She’s a damn hard worker, but she’s going to burn herself out if she’s not careful. “Take the night off.”
“I’m trying to avoid my roommates,” she explains. “I eat early and then hide out in my bedroom.”
“Or your closet,” I mutter, but not quietly enough.
Yanking her hand away from me, her lips part.
“I should have known that stalking would extend to my bedroom. Are you watching me in the shower too?” she complains.
“No,” I grunt. “You live with three grown fucking monsters, your scent leaking through your pores because you were sweating. You bet your sweet ass I was going to make sure you were fucking safe, little girl.”
“I still don’t understand how you ended up in that dormitory,” Phenex mutters. “Samael was trying to figure out why he was drawn to you, so we talked it through, Lorelei. Anything your mind is trying to twist this into, isn’t that.”
“You two just confuse me so much,” she says, deflating. “My head is spinning.”
“This is your last class of the day,” I remind her. “Be a good girl and get through it, and we’ll feed you dinner.”
“Why… How does that sound so dirty?” she groans.
“It’s a special talent,” I say, smirking. “Seriously, less talking.”
Blowing out a breath, she hurries for the door as I follow her. My dick is firmly pressed against my zipper, asking why we aren’t balls deep inside of her. Omegas need knots typically, and that’s something I can create, just like my tail can appear or disappear. After so many years of not finding my omega and the plague that killed them all, my body simply absorbed it in protest.
Now, watching her ass bounce in her shorts as I walk a couple of steps behind her, I can see my knot is definitely going to make its reappearance soon. My entire body is in tune with her, and once we step back onto the sidewalk outside of the apartments, I take her hand and blast the five foot area around us with fear vibes to clear it.
The delicious energy I usually receive from feeding off it is going to go to waste because I’m still full from yesterday. I don’t understand why since it usually takes a very large feeding for that to happen. On Halloween, I’ll travel to a haunted house to feed like a glutton off the fear there and be full for days, but yesterday wasn’t like that.
The only difference between a normal feeding and the other day is Lorelei. I have a feeling she’s going to change everything.
