CHAPTER 15

SAMAEL

I ’ve had a bad feeling about this meeting with Therese from the moment Lorelei texted us. Phenex has a pinched look on his face, rubbing his chest as he makes grunts of pain.

Something just isn’t right.

“I can’t sit here and wait. I’m going to see her. Ah, I’m also probably going to make our relationship public,” I say, wincing.

“Do whatever you need to. She feels really odd through the bond. I don’t like it,” he says. “She’s freaking out.”

As he nods, I disappear before he can say anymore.

In reality, she and I aren’t hiding. Anyone with eyes can see the way I hold her hand or kiss her goodbye as we go in different directions for the day. I’ll also take her to eat around campus, though it’s just to watch her eat.

My mind is racing as I beat my fist on the door. I can hear her voice, and I need to get in.

Right. Fucking. Now.

“Who is it? I’m a little busy,” Therese says, her tone irritated.

I’m about to do something really stupid, and I can’t find it in myself to care. Twisting the door knob, I walk inside.

“Why are you detaining Miss Rose?” I ask, brow raised.

“Why is it any of your business?” Therese asks. “It’s my job to track where scholarship students are laying their heads at night. Misuse of funds is a grave concern with the current crisis if they’re not where they’re supposed to be.”

That’s bullshit, but I’ll let that slide.

“She’s living with me,” I state. “I’ll go by and pack up her things to ensure that the room can go to someone else. We were making sure that her status as both my food source and girlfriend were solidified before we formally announced it to the school.”

Lorelei blinks at me as my hand brushes her hair to the side and wraps around the back of her throat. I can feel her pulse thumping at an excited pace, even as her face remains impassive. That’s it, don’t give Therese anything to jump on.

“She’s your… Samael,” Therese says, dumbfounded.

I’m a fear demon, which means that in times when it’s difficult for me to feed, I’m able to choose one person to be my sole source of food. Ironically, it’s also what demons have done to keep their omegas a secret while still giving them the respect they deserve.

Many demons before me have found that their soul bonds to their omega even without a bite, making them the only person they can feed from. I recently did some research on this inside of the demonic texts in the special topics section when I realized that I couldn’t feed from anyone else. It’s only available in our language, which means not many people can understand them.

Everything I do is to ensure her safety. Especially this. It’s a gamble because it’s not done anymore, and I’m enacting an ancient tradition. However, since I can't feed from anyone other than her anyway, all I’m doing is making our relationship public.

Being my food source also isn’t a derogatory thing. It is often for life, meaning that I am binding her to me forever and a big fucking deal. It’s a place of importance in my life.

While we haven’t had this conversation yet, I do intend to keep her.

“I didn’t stutter, did I, Therese?” I ask.

“No, but that’s a very serious declaration and she’s so young,” she hisses.

“It doesn’t make it any less true,” Lorelei adds, standing as tall as her short stature allows. She’s not going to take any shit, which is why I love her.

Is it fast for me to declare any of this? Maybe, but I’ve been waiting a long time to feel pulled to anyone the way I am to Lorelei. I’m not going to waste a moment.

“Are you trying to imply this is inappropriate?” I ask wryly. “President Christa is well aware of the situation and hasn’t uttered a word of discontent.”

Regardless of the stretch that may be, if she hasn’t yanked me into her office, then we’re fine. The woman doesn’t mince her words, and she’s been up Phenex’s ass still.

This will be better for all parties involved.

“Of course not,” Therese says. “I guess the mystery of where you’re staying has been solved.”

“It was never a mystery,” I reply. “Our relationship was private while Lorelei and I have been getting to know each other. It also wasn’t a secret to anyone paying attention.”

My thumb continues to trace over her pulse point. I’m annoyed with Therese, and want to ensure that Lorelei is able to eat lunch today. This all means that I’m going to do something a bit flashy.

It’s a day of firsts it seems, oh goody.

“I… you’re right,” Therese says, stumbling over her words.

The room is becoming frigid as my annoyance becomes anger. I can see Lorelei’s breath, and watch as she snuggles further into her coat. I appreciate that she’s allowing me to be myself. Anyone else would tell me to stop pouting.

Well, they would if they didn’t respect the fact that my control slips when I’m angry. Lorelei is always safe with me. It’s everyone else that may have to worry.

“I know I’m right. Now, if you’ll excuse us, I need to ensure that Lorelei eats lunch before she continues her busy day,” I rumble. My voice is between a purr and a growl.

Therese is pissing me all the way off today. Wrapping my arms around my omega, I bury my face against her neck as I breathe, “Hold on, beautiful.”

Her hands immediately find places to grab and then we’re gone. My chest is pressed against hers, so everything on her body comes with us as well. I could feel her sharp inhaled breath just before we misted away, though neither of us have to breathe in this state.

Phenex is pacing back and forth as he waits for us, turning as we appear in the living room.

“What was all of that about?” he asks, appearing stressed.

Releasing Lorelei, I watch as she walks over to hug him.

“The Dean of Student Housing received a tip from Adares that I was ‘missing’ since I haven’t gone to my dorm,” she explains.

“I told Therese that she was living with me as my food source and girlfriend,” I add, watching as Phenex’s eyes widen as he hugs Lorelei back.

“ What the fuck,” he mouths. As an ancient civilization professor, he knows exactly what that means. “You went all in on claiming Lorelei today, didn’t you?”

The question is said out loud, and I huff out a laugh.

“Therese was looking for a scandal and I wasn’t going to allow that,” I grunt. “Adares is also an asshole for reporting her to the housing department.”

I plan to find him as soon as I can to fuck with him.

“Well, thankfully there’s still time for lunch if you hitch a ride with Samael to class,” Phenex suggests.

Snorting, I roll my eyes as I stride to the kitchen where I know he has the food kept on the warmer.

“I’m not a taxi,” I call out over my shoulder, enjoying her giggle.

Phenex follows me into the kitchen, and I hear the bathroom door close. Sighing, I shake my head as I begin getting the food and he grabs plates.

“I don’t understand what Therese was thinking,” I grumble. “She was intently discussing something with Lorelei when I banged on her office door. She was acting like this was a mystery that needed to be solved.”

“She was fine when I called her weeks prior to ask about Lorelei’s housing arrangements, and said that she was sorry she couldn’t change her room,” Phenex says. “Adares must have put a bug in her ear about Lorelei. Fucking punk.”

“I’ll handle him,” I sigh, moving to the dining room table to place the serving dish on the table.

“If you can get away with a punch, I’d appreciate it,” Phenex grumbles as Lorelei reappears.

“For who?” she asks, hearing him.

“Adares,” I answer, sitting down and pulling her in my lap.

“Oh, well he is a dick. Feel free to have fun with him,” she says, shrugging as Phenex serves her food and sits across from her. “The Dean was trying to catch me in a lie. At least that’s how it felt to me. I was starting to really freak out.”

“I could feel your panic, and Samael lit out of here,” Phenex says, watching her as she begins to eat. At her slight glare, he nods and serves himself food as well. “Hopefully, your day improves.”

“I didn’t think I’d have time to eat, so it already has,” she says cheekily. “I also didn’t expect to be claimed quite so publically.”

“We didn’t have a chance to talk about it,” I say, my lips against her temple. “Are you okay with all of this?”

“I will never say no to you telling someone I belong to you,” she says with a wide grin.

Phenex’s face clouds, and I know he’s upset that he can’t do the same. I believe it would be fine, but for some reason, he’s a very eligible bachelor that would be removing himself from whatever metaphorical dating scene that women see him in. It may cause some discomfort for a while, yet I doubt it’ll get him fired.

He’s going to need to figure it out, because Lorelei is getting a complex about being a secret. While her designation needs to remain one, our relationships with her shouldn’t.

“You’re working tonight and have rehearsals, don’t you?” I ask.

Wrinkling her nose as she takes a sip of water, she nods. “Yes to all of that. This is my slower day as far as classes, but Professor Dalca is jumping right into things. He emailed to tell me I’m cast in a role that’ll need a lot of time and attention,” she complains. “I was hoping for something that would be easy, but I don’t want to whine about it.”

“Complaining and whining aren’t the same thing,” Phenex says. “You have a really stacked schedule. How many times a week are you required at rehearsals?”

“Two times a week, but that’ll ramp up as we get closer to performance nights. Don’t get me wrong, I think I’ll enjoy playing Cria. I’ve been going through her songs, and she seems like a lot of fun. What I don’t appreciate is how little free time I’m going to have,” she says.

“I get it, and then add in the papers that are coming up as well, it’s stressful,” I add. “Dalca is up to something.”

“I haven’t the faintest idea what. He hates me,” she says with a shrug. Checking the time, she takes a final bite and stands. “I just need a second to refill my water bottle and then I’m ready to go.”

“You’re good on time,” I remind her. “I fully intend to mist you there. I don’t even have to pretend you walked anymore.”

Phenex rolls his eyes watching as Lorelei walks to her backpack to grab her bottle and goes into the kitchen.

“I’m glad you’re public, but jealous as hell. I need to schedule a meeting with President Christa. I’ll figure out what I’m going to say,” he mutters. “She’s been dropping by my office hours recently. It’s odd.”

“Better your office than your home,” I grunt. “I’ll go by Lorelei’s dorm and hope Adares is home alone. I have some aggression to work out.”

“Enjoy,” Phenex says, perking up with a smirk.

“Glad to help,” I chuckle, standing. Phenex picks up the dishes as Lorelei returns, and I watch as she gets her things.

Come to think of it, I’ve felt a set of eyes on me when I’m with her, but wrote it off as any number of students we’re surrounded by. Now, I’m wondering if it’s been Adares.

As soon as I have a chance, hopefully tonight, I’ll get to pay the dorms a visit.

Fuck, the weekend was one thing after another. I also dislike squandering my time when Lorelei and I get so little of it.

The days have just been melding into each other, and now it’s Tuesday afternoon. Glaring at the dorm building where her things are, I stride toward the front door. Phenex is at the library with Lorelei, planning a lecture while she writes a paper. Ever since she was spooked when she was alone, we’ve made ourselves available to hang out with her while she’s doing research.

We feel more confident in her safety this way, and she’s not scared as she moves between the stacks researching and writing for class assignments.

Nodding at a student as they open the door, I walk through as if I should be here. I need to appear as if I walked through the old-fashioned way for the cameras on this floor, so there’s proof that I came for her things. No one will believe that I beat the shit out of Adares, though.

I’ll also ensure he craps himself while I catch it on camera. It’s the little things in life that make me happy. Phenex and Alecto will also appreciate the opportunity to watch it later. I can be a team player and brother mate when I want to be.

Ew. Let’s never say that again. Gagging as I get into the empty elevator, I wait until the doors close before misting away.

Moving through the dorm room, I find Adares in his room but everyone else is gone. I do have Lorelei’s key in case anyone asks, and he has a pair of earphones on. I want the element of surprise to work for me. Slipping off to her room, I return to my form to drop off the cart I’m carrying with me to pack all of her things up.

Since Adares is busy, I quickly begin to pack all of Lorelei’s things up. Lifting a sweater that doesn’t immediately smell like anyone I recognize from the closet, I realize it’s the scent of the monster who broke into her room. He fucking left his sweater in her nest.

What a twunt. Scowling, I drop the sweater in a resealable bag so it won’t affect the rest of her possessions to bring with me. Every omega has different cycles for their heats, and stress can affect it. She may need this in her nest during it if we can’t work out who the wanker is.

Looking around, I sigh as I see that everything she owns fits inside of the cart I assembled. It’s ready to be pulled out of the room, as soon as I take care of one little thing.

Opening the door as if I own the place, I step outside to find Adares standing in front of the refrigerator, a carrot dangling from between his fangs. The dorm room is still completely empty outside of the two of us.

My work is done, now I can have some fun. Ensuring I shut the door behind me, I stroll toward Adares.

“What are you doing here?” he mumbles, shutting the fridge door. Pulling the half bitten carrot from his lips, he tosses it onto a plate. “More than that, how the fuck did you get in?”

“Keys,” I grunt, lifting them from my pocket to show him. “I’m also one of the most powerful fear demons outside of the gates of Hell. Do you know what that means?”

“You’re more likely to prey on little blonde whores?” he scoffs.

That’s cute.

Since I can manipulate my body’s molecules, I can also control air as well. It’s part of playing on creatures’ fears when they find they can no longer breathe. With a single thought, I smirk as Adares makes a soft choking sound. It takes a second longer before his hand is on his throat, but the reality is that there’s no air. It’s just…gone.

It’s not circulating, the oxygen isn’t even in his lungs anymore. If I really tried, I could remove it from every blood vessel in his body, however I’m not ready for my fun to end. As he drops to his knees, I walk slowly over to him, ensuring that he can hear every footstep on the linoleum floor of the kitchen.

“You’ve been fucking with my girl,” I murmur. I make sure not to be too quiet, I need him to hear me over the roaring of the blood in his ears, after all. “Lorelei is very special to me, and she doesn’t feel safe as a woman in this dorm situation. Someone broke into her room, and that was the last night she stayed here.”

My fist swings before I make the conscious decision to move it. I’m fucking infuriated by the audacity of this monster.

“Do you have siblings?” I ask, punching him again. The blood flows sluggishly from his nose as I break it, and I want my words to resonate in his mind, whether he’s able to respond or not.

Cognizant that I need to take care of my plaything if I want it to live long enough for me to enjoy myself, I let the oxygen return to his body. A deep inhale, maybe two, is all I allow Adares before removing his ability to do so again and kick him onto his back.

The stick of dick cheese tried to scream. Such a damn dumb move. I can tell the difference between gasping for breath for the sake of the life giving property it’ll gift you, and gasping to speak.

Jumping into the air, I stomp on Adare’s body, enjoying the soundless scream. His lips pulling into the motion to give that sweet sound, if he had the oxygen to do so, actually makes my dick hard.

Kicking, jumping, pulling him by his shirt to punch him, all making Adares puke at one point, and I simply mist away before he can get any of the putrid shit on me. Now, my fun can begin since I can’t allow myself to get more fluid on my clothes than I already have.

Thank fuck that I chose to wear black clothing today.

Allowing him to breathe, but stealing his voice, I pluck his worst nightmares from his mind. That’s the trouble with a fear demon: we can make you believe all of that shit is actually happening. By the time his roommates come in, he’ll be incoherent, living on a loop of fear.

He’ll be shipped off to a mental institution, but none of the shit they push into his body will help. Unless I choose to remove my influence, which I won’t, he’ll need to kill himself to be able to escape it.

In fact… a cruel smile curls my lips as I open drawers until I find the utensils. Pulling out a fork, I drop it near him and close the drawer. After all, I don’t want him to hurt anyone else. This way, if he figures out a way to kill himself with the fork, he’ll at least deserve his death due to ingenuity and commitment.

Adares writhes as he scrapes at his arms with his claws, screaming wordlessly and soundlessly. When someone walks into the dorm, the bubble around his vocal cords will burst. I’m efficient, if anything, in my torture.

The monster on the ground in front of me is afraid of many things, and one of them is spiders. Another is being alone, which is why tears are streaming from his eyes. I’ve convinced him that he’ll forever be without another soul near him, and that the world hates him.

He also can’t see any light or objects, and believes that he is blind.

It’s not smart to fuck with a fear demon’s mate.

“Why not just pull his very essence away from his body and call it done?” a demon covered in green, shimmering scales asks speculatively.

Sighing, I ask myself which Hell-scape creatures I must have pissed off to send me such an inquisitive imp. Ah, my parents are the culprits.

“That wouldn’t be any fun,” I state. “I want him to suffer. Now, what do you want? I have a very busy schedule to keep.”

“Of feeding and torture?” he asks, eyes wide and excited. The imp is naked, and I struggle to swallow back my sigh. He’s very newly released from Hell, especially sent to me.

“Sure,” I grunt. “I am not returning to Hell. Please remind my parents of this.”

“I can’t! You have to come. They’re really scary,” he complains.

“Not my problem,” I mutter, turning to face him fully and crossing my arms. The door to Lorelei’s room is closed, but I don’t want to go in there until he’s gone.

Releasing any of her scent, even though she’s been gone for weeks, isn’t something I want to do. Before I leave, I’ll open the window in her room to air it out. However, this imp doesn’t get even a whisper of her essence.

“I’m also very scary,” I state. “Would you like to receive a lesson in why there have been countless demons over the last thousand years who have failed to get me to go back? I’m older than I even care to remember from my time in Hell, so I simply don't acknowledge it. As you can see, my day has just begun with the devastation I plan to wreck. Please ask yourself if you’d like to be a broken body within it.”

“You really aren’t going to come home, are you?” he pouts.

“Nope,” I grunt. “Now go away. Straight home, understood?”

The last words are spoken in the demon language most think is dead, but when you cut your teeth on it, the words stay with you.

The imp inclines his head, but that’s not good enough for me. Snatching him up by the throat, I lift him into the air.

“Words, little imp,” I snarl, enjoying as his scales turn black, to red, to green again. This is the equivalent of a demon about to shit himself.

“Yes, sir,” he hisses. “Straight to Hell.”

“Tell my parents hello,” I state, dropping him. His feet don’t bother to hit the ground before he disappears, and I feel for his presence in the air.

I am not the only demon capable of what I can do, and I’m well aware of it.

“Home,” I growl, nodding when he fully removes his presence from not only the room but the world. “Fuck, the little shit was bold, I’ll give him that.”

Wrinkling my nose at the stench of rotten eggs, I ignore Lorelei’s silent but terrorized ex-roommate, who is now standing and bashing his head against the wall. Smirking, I hurry to my omega’s room so I can open the window and disappear to the hallway with my wagon. Adares is making a lot of noise.

Passing by Bast Dalco in the lobby a few minutes later, I feel a bubble of laughter at the knowledge that his day is about to take a turn into the shitter. There’s going to be a lot of paperwork for him to fill out.

Incident reports, emails to authorities and Adares’ family members. I feel no remorse as I walk proudly with the wagon full of my mate’s belongings back to Phenex’s apartment.

This is the best fucking day.
