44. Epilogue 2
Jemima
That weekend, we’re gathered around the coffee table, playing Chutes and Ladders.
Harvey is fidgeting in my chair, shooting me subtle looks every few minutes like, Are we gonna tell him yet? I smile back, silently telling him to wait.
Chad spins and lands on a ladder, climbing up the board with a big grin.
“Nice move,” Harvey says, ruffling Chad’s hair.
Chad beams, and it feels like the perfect moment. I glance at Harvey, giving him a subtle nod.
“Hey, honey,” I say, keeping my voice light but warm. “We have some exciting news.”
Chad’s eyes widen. “What? Are we getting a dog?”
I laugh. “Not quite. You’re going to be a big brother.”
For a second, Chad freezes, processing. Then, he jumps up, pumping his fist in the air. “Yes! This is so cool!” Beaming, he glances between Harvey and me.
“I’m glad you think so,” Harvey says with a grin. “We’re pretty excited too.”
Chad flops back onto the floor, clearly thrilled. “When’s the baby coming? Is it a boy or a girl?”
His questions about the baby catch me off guard. I’m surprised, especially since he still hasn’t asked anything about Butch.
“It’s too early to know.” I chuckle. “But we’ll let you know when we find out.”
After the game, I lean back on the couch, a wave of contentment washing over me. “We’d better get you to bed,” I say to Chad, nudging him gently.
“You stay here,” Harvey offers, already standing. “I’ll take him. I’ll be back soon.”
“What do you feel like eating when I get back?”
Resting a hand on his chest, I laugh softly. “I don’t have cravings yet.”
Harvey leans down and presses a kiss to my forehead, his eyes filled with love. “You’ve changed my life,” he murmurs. “And I’ll always be grateful for you.”
I watch him walk away with Chad; my heart full as I take it all in. Moments like this remind me of how lucky we are.
The End.
