Chapter 28

CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT

HEATHER

Friday morning, I stood in the middle of Hector and Dad’s main office and stared at the elevators. My heart was racing about a hundred miles a minute, and I couldn’t get it to stop. Today was the day that Professor Eric had an interview.

In twelve minutes, to be exact.

And Hector wasn’t here yet.

I grabbed my phone from my purse and texted my group chat with the girls.

Me: I’M FREAKING OUT! SEND HELP.

Suddenly, the elevator chimed. My gaze snapped up to it, and I spotted Hector stepped out of the small compartment. Brunette hair pulled up into a high ponytail, Evelyn walked out of the elevator with a short pencil skirt and a low-cut fuchsia top.

They were talking quietly to each other, and they were close … so close. He had told me not to worry about Evelyn, and she had even seemed so nice at Radiant—plus, she was banging my dad—but still … I didn’t feel like I could compare.

After she nodded to him, he headed to his office while she walked my way.

Morning, Heather. She beamed.

I chewed on the inside of my cheek. “Morning. What were you and, uh …”

Fuck, that sounded like me being a jealous bitch.

“Hector and I were talking about?” she finished. “Just something for later.”

“Oh.”

She smiled. “Don’t worry about it. I’m not into him like I am with your fa?—”

Okay! Okay! I don t need the details! I said, my phone beginning to buzz like crazy.

Because … ew.

“What’re you up to?” she asked, grabbing some papers off her desk.

“Oh, uh …” I said, smoothing out my shirt. “Just waiting for Hector to start an interview.”

For some reason, her smile widened. “I heard. You going to help him out during it?”

I arched a brow, a giggle bubbling up in my throat. “No, not like that!”

Evelyn! Dad shouted from his office. I need you in here.

After Evelyn winked at me, I swallowed some bile that rose in my throat from the thought of her doing that with my father and pulled out my phone to check the group chat, which was on fire right now, just to calm my nerves.

Sun: What happened??

Athena: Heather???

Athena: What’s going on?

Sierra: Her professor has a job interview at her dad s company.

Sierra: She’s nervous about it …

Sierra: And maybe being dramatic.

Um, excuse me, Sierra, Miss Insecure About Everything!

Me: I’m not being dramatic! This is serious!

Sun: What time is the interview?

Me: Five minutes!

Sun: Who is doing the interview?

Sierra: Hector.

Athena: Oh. I thought this was actually something serious.

My eyes widened, and I began pacing the floor, almost bumping into everyone.

Me: This is serious!

Athena: It’s literally an interview with the guy you’re dating.

Sierra: You think Hector’s actually going to give him the job?

Athena: No!

Sun: I don’t know. He seems to really like her.

Athena: Exactly why he’s not going to give him the job.

Athena: He’s probably going to just put him in his place.

Athena: Ya know, embarrass him.

I chewed on the inside of my cheek and stared at Hector’s office door. While Evelyn was doing God knew what with Dad to keep him distracted, Hector had asked me to come in today to oversee his interview with Eric, and I was having NONE of this!

All I wanted was to crawl back into my bed and cry myself to sleep because Hector had actually decided to give that asshole an interview. I needed to pass, but not this badly. I should ve never opened my big mouth.

Between begging to give him blow jobs all day and promising to never be a brat again, I had pleaded with him to not let me come today. I didn’t want to watch him give a job to a man that I hated just to get me a good grade in the class.

In fact, I would do close to anything to get out of it.

Athena: You re going to be fine.

Athena: He’s not getting the job!

Me: You don’t know that!

Me: If he does, then I’m going to have to see his face even more during the week.

Me: I will literally throw up if that happens.

Sierra: Drama hehe

The elevator dinged, and I shoved my phone into my pocket, squeezed my eyes closed, and whined. Why was this happening to me?! Why was this happening to me?! Why was this happening to meeee?

When I reopened my eyes, Professor fucking Eric stepped out of the elevator. His hair was greased back like a wannabe gangster. He had on a suit that looked way too big for him. And this goddamn man was looking straight at me.

Me!

With a smirk!

Head up, Heather, Hector hummed from his door. You shouldn t be slouching, nor signing. I might need to teach you proper etiquette later this evening. After tsking and shaking his head at me, Hector walked right to the elevator doors to greet that stupid piece-of-shit professor that shouldn t be teaching in the first place. Eric, I m Hector. It s nice to meet you.
