Someone gently shook my shoulder, and my eyes flew open. I blinked rapidly until the older woman smiling gently at me came into focus, while I tried to make sense of where I was.

The feeling was too reminiscent of when I woke up in a hospital in Germany not that long ago with no idea how I’d ended up there.

“Haven Springs,” she declared quietly. “This is your stop, isn’t it?”

I peeled my forehead away from the cool bus window and sat up in my seat, looking around as my brain worked to catch up with my surroundings.

Finally, I got my bearings and mumbled, “Um, yeah. Thanks for waking me up,” while I cast a glance out at the gloomy summer morning. Considering why I’d traveled overnight on this bus; I supposed the weather was appropriate.

The woman nodded, then stood and moved into the aisle so I could pass. I pulled my backpack from the overhead storage, then as I headed toward the front, I heard her offer a cheery, “Good luck!”

I paused at her words.

Good luck.

I had a feeling I was going to need it.

While I appreciated her encouragement, I didn’t look back. Just soldiered ahead like the good Marine I was.
