CHAPTER 11
SPENCER
This was the sixth Monday since we’d met. What had started out as an agreement to get together one night a week had failed. Since that first night, we’d spent every night together either at my place or his. We’d tried a few times to stay away but one of us would give up and end up at the other’s house.
Valentine’s Day was coming up, but it was such a busy night for Jake’s restaurant we’d decided to celebrate it early which is why I was on my way to his place and I hoped he liked what I had planned. After parking my car, I checked that my tie was straight, and my hair was still in place. Not that any of that mattered to him, we genuinely liked each other just for who we were but it didn’t hurt to put in a little effort.
“What are you waiting for?” he yelled from the front door where he now stood watching me. He was dressed in the same tux he’d worn the night we met and looked just as handsome as he had then. I picked up the roses I’d bought and hurried to him.
“These are for you,” I said and kissed him.
“Thank you, that’s very sweet.” He breathed in their scent before smiling at me. “No one’s ever given me flowers before.”
“Well get used to it,” I said and kissed him again.
“I forgot how good you look in that suit,” he said and looked me up and down while I walked past him into his house.
“I have to admit I thought the same thing when I saw you.”
“So, what are we doing tonight?” He’d let me plan the evening and I hoped he liked it as much as I thought he would. “I packed an overnight bag just like you said. Care to tell me what you have planned?”
“Nope, I want it to be a surprise.”
“Just a hint?” he asked again. He’d been trying for about a week, and I thought he could probably guess what I had planned but he didn’t really want to know.
“Nope, not until we’re there.”
“I never would have thought my boyfriend would be so good at keeping something from me,” he said with fake outrage dripping from his lips before I leaned in and sucked one of those lips into my mouth.
“Do you know how much I love you calling me your boyfriend?” I asked.
“Almost as much as I like calling you my boyfriend?” We had become that couple. The one no one could stand to be around because we were so fucking in love, we couldn’t hide it from anyone and neither of us were willing to try.
“Let me put these in water and we can go,” he said and hurried into the kitchen. A small bag stood by the door making me smile. Even if he didn’t know what we were doing he was ready to go without question. “Okay, I’m all yours.”
I wrapped my arms around him and kissed him because I still hadn’t had enough of him and picked up his bag before we both walked out to my car. “Are we going out of town?” he asked.
“You’ll see,” I said and the two of us got in the car. The drive to the hotel only took about twenty minutes and as soon as I pulled into the parking garage he turned to look at me wearing a big smile.
“Aw, you brought us to where we first met.”
“We have reservations at the restaurant, so we don’t have to leave all night, and I even got us the same room.”
“Of course you did,” he said and leaned across the seat. “Have I told you how much I love you?”
“Not recently.”
“Spencer Cline, I love you and I am so happy they used that shitty font that confused me and made me go to the wrong group before sticking you with me again. I’m so excited to spend the night with you.”
“We have spent every night together since we met,” I said, making him smile.
“I know. We’re both weak.”
“We’re in love.” I brushed my thumb across his cheek before kissing him again. “We’re so in love.”
We still worked way too much, but we made sure to make time for each other, and without needing to use a scheduled day to be together. Tonight, it would be special, and I hoped eventually we’d end up living in the same house. But until then I was more than willing to make sure Jake knew he was the most important thing in my life.
“Come on, let’s go see if anything has changed in our room,” Jake said. What was the chance that two workaholics could find the one person who would make them want to forget all about work every moment they were together? I wasn’t sure what the odds were on that, but I was thankful that the odds were in our favor when we met, and that the mixer organizers had chosen a shitty font.
