~ Chapter Six ~

I didn’t want to wake up. That’s all I knew as I felt the sun’s rays’ peek into the room, heating up my back. The woman in my arms was perfection and I didn’t want to leave her.

She curled around my body just like a perfect dress and it was delectable. I also knew that if I didn’t move soon, she would be waking up to feeling that hard dick once more pressing against her stomach.

“Boss, are you awake?”

I opened my eyes wide, glaring at the door. The instant pounding was bound to wake up this siren and I didn’t want that.

“Stop glaring.” I looked down at her smiling face. “I see your dick wants to come out and play. Shall we let it?”

“Woman! Not now. There’s someone at my door.”

“I hear, Trevor. Let them in before they break down your door, huh?”

“Fine,” I muttered, pulling the covers up to her chin. “What is it, O’Malley?”

The door swung up and the man stuttered, surprised to see me in bed, I’m sure.

“Uh, sorry Boss, I thought you’d be up. You need to see this.” His eyes flicked to the woman who was carefully sitting up. “Morning Lucia.”

“Morning. What happened?”

I read over the newspaper that he handed me, my hand clenching at my side.

“Seems there were two more bombings; one on either side of the town. That warehouse is a main factory of mine,” I told her, pointing to the location on the map. “There were probably about forty men working there last night.”

“That’s my dad’s shipping warehouse. I don’t know if anyone was there, but I know it’s a main building for him too. Are they targeting our families or something? What’s the point? And if they were, was the attack on the mayor’s house for us and not for him?”

I glanced at her, lifting my brow at her questions. I shouldn’t be amazed that women thought outside the box. It was often something the women in my families did, offering insight. What amazed me, though, was that she had pieced together what was slowly dawning on me.

These attacks were for both families. Someone was trying to get us both out of the picture.

I just needed to know who.

“Sorry, should I not have asked?”

“No, Lucia, feel free to speak your mind. I love it. And I’m going to go out on the limb with you and say yes, we’re both being targeted. But I don’t know why.”

“If that’s the case, the why is easy. You control half the city, Trevor, while my dad has the other half. If you weaken both sides, it’s easy to overtake what’s left. It’s also even better if the one doing the attack is thinking they could cause a war that would lead both families to fight each other.

“This, like anything else, is a power play. The question that needs to be asked is what are you going to do about it? What is my father going to do about it? And then, what are you BOTH going to do about it?”

“Boss?” I glanced up, rather dazed by her clear thinking and nodded to Jameson to speak. “Russo is at the front door, wanting a meeting with you and Lucia.”

Lucia

If there is anything I learned about my dad, a meeting with him this early in the morning wasn’t a good thing.

I glanced at Trevor who only nodded and then stood up, roaming in his closet and coming out minutes later, looking every inch the powerful Irish Mobster on his way to meet the equally powerful Italian mafia.

With a sigh, I threw the covers off and then trailed after him out of the room.

“Dad,” I greeted, kissing his cheek as we walked into the dining area.

“I’m glad to see you safe, Lucia. Would prefer other clothes, but I do understand.”

I rolled my eyes at his comment but wouldn’t dare stop the smile from coming, mentally laughing at the glare he gave me.

“Now, Russo, what brings you to my wee lil’ house.”

“Really Trevor, this isn’t a wee little house. Besides, you had my daughter, I was coming by to get her and talk to you.”

“I would have taken her home, you know.”

I looked at my dad as he glanced at the men in the room, then shifted my focus to Trevor as he gestured for everyone to get out.

“I don’t mind talking in front of men, you know this, Doyle.”

“I do. So whatever you have to say is pretty private.”

“It is.” I locked my eyes with my dad, already seeing the onset of this topic. “As I’m sure you’ve heard, there was another bombing. I know it didn’t cripple our status, but it still is a blow. I’m coming to think that someone wants us to go to war.”

“Funny, Lucia thought the same thing,” Trevor said. “I do have to agree with both of you. She also believes this is a power play.” I nodded my head to him to go on as he glanced at me. “She’s a smart one. Has a lot of ideas about these recent acts.”

“She does. She would make a fine wife.”

I sucked in a sharp breath, not fully shocked by his words; just more so how he blurted them out.

“I…I agree.”

“Come now, Doyle, don’t play dumb, it doesn’t look good on you. We’ve fought over this city for decades, finally coming to a truce. Now we have a common enemy trying to outdo all our hard work. I don’t know about you, but this is my city just as much as it is yours and I don’t want another war that’s going to cost me billions and lots of lives.”

“I agree. So, what’s your game plan?”

“Me,” I finally offered. “A union, a marriage, between you and me. A uniting of the families so nothing can undo it.”
