Chapter Thirteen
Alaina
“ D ax! Rogues. Vampires. They’re everywhere!” I peek my head out the window to the infirmary, watching in horror as my former pack is under attack.
“I know. I’m coming, but I need you to stay put until I can get to you,” Dax says.
Ducking before anyone can spot me, I slump to the floor, extending my legs out in front of me.
Some queen I was, hiding in the infirmary like a coward. But as much as I wanted to go out there, I know Dax was right. With the amount of them, it was a slaughter. I had to be smart until I could come up with a better strategy or until Dax and his team arrived.
Another reason to stay inside lies in the sterile, white bed.
No way was I leaving him.
A single pounding against the only door to the infirmary startles me. Seconds later, the banging is there again. Someone’s trying to get in.
I listen closely, thinking it’s maybe someone from Bloodhound trying to seek shelter.
Seconds pass, and no one says anything. I look at Alpha Jack, his snarl confirming he’s arrived at the same conclusion as me.
It’s one of them .
My heart races, and I pray that if we’re quiet enough, whoever it is will go away. I know they’re likely looking for me. Although I don’t know why. If they find me, there’s no telling what they’ll do with Alpha Jack as a witness.
Please.
Instead, the banging increases in pace, consistently one after another.
It’s not just one of them.
They’re throwing their bodies against the door.
Alpha Jack and I nod to each other. On his signal, we both stand. Against one rogue, he and I would have a chance. Two would be difficult with one of us injured, but there isn’t another option with no other exit or place to hide. It was only a matter of time until they knock the door down. They were coming for us.
“I love you,” I say to Dax.
“Don’t you dare say goodbye.”
“They’re here, Dax.”
Dax’s only response is a growl.
Two rogues burst in, blowing the door off its hinges. They’re both the color of shadows, which is fitting for these soulless creatures. They’re foaming at the mouth, their eyes set on me.
The darker one charges, and I nearly duck out of the way before the other one starts pummeling toward me. I kick the wolf in the nose, eliciting a whimper from him. I almost lose my footing, relying on my injured leg for balance, but I refuse to let them see my weakness, just as Dax taught me.
The lighter-one bumps into me, knocking me into a steel cart. A scalpel falls off the cart, lodging itself into the foot of my formerly injured leg. I cry out, blood seeping out of the new wound.
I can’t fight with this thing sticking out of me .
Bracing myself, I grasp the handle and pull the scalpel out. More blood trickles out of the wound from the blade slicing through flesh. I throw it to the ground, letting out a sigh of relief.
The darker wolf throws Alpha Jack into the wall beside me before hitting the floor with a loud thump. He clutches his shoulder, his face twisting in agony. Seeing my former alpha in such disarray at the hands of these filthy rogues has my blood boiling.
The darker wolf tumbles toward me, and I’m ready for him. I roll to the side in time for the wolf to smash its snout into the bench they’ve thrown me into.
I climb on top of him, clawing at its back, tearing its flesh. The wolf is trying to turn its head to snap its jaws at me, almost throwing me off. Then I wrap my arms around its neck in a chokehold, restricting its airways. I’m holding on for dear life, pleading the wolf will go to sleep before I tire.
The wolf is stumbling, throwing its body weight into anything it can to knock me off, but I stay locked in. Its front paws bend as their lungs give in, beginning to lose consciousness.
If I can just hold on a little longer...
The lighter wolf flies at me, grabbing my shoulder with its jaws, then tosses me off of its accomplice. I’m rolling until the front side of my body makes contact with grass.
I’m facing the direction of the infirmary, staring at the doorway. I perch myself up on my elbows and see the two wolves circling Alpha Jack.
“Hey!” I yell to try to get their attention back on me.
But it’s no use. They have their sights set on him.
I scramble to push myself up on my heels, when there’s a slight pinch on my neck, and my legs give out instantly below me.
“Hello, Alaina,” Olivia sneers.
I succumb to total darkness before I can tell her to fuck off.
