CRIMSON DEBTS
Chapter 1 The Masterpiece and the Monster
The Vane Art Gallery was more than a business; it was a sanctuary.
Julian stood on a stepladder, a smudge of cobalt blue paint on his cheek, carefully adjusting the lighting on a canvas. Below him, his father, Arthur, was laughing as he shared a thermos of tea with an elderly local artist.
"Careful, Jules!" Arthur called out, his eyes crinkling with pride. "That's a Vane original. If it falls, your old man might have a heart attack."
"It's not going to fall, Dad," Julian laughed, jumping down with a grace that came from years of moving through crowded studios. He wiped his hands on his apron and hugged his father's shoulder.
The Vanes were happy. They weren't rich, but their home was filled with the smell of home-cooked meals, the sound of jazz records, and the vibrant colors of Julian's sketches.
Arthur was a man who believed in the beauty of the world-a belief that made him a wonderful father, but a terrible businessman.
He saw the best in everyone, even the people he should have feared.
"I found this today," Julian whispered, pulling a small, half-finished sketch from his pocket. It was a drawing of a bird with a broken wing, being held by a pair of large, scarred hands. "I don't know why I drew it. It just felt like... something was coming."
Arthur smiled, but for a moment, a shadow crossed his face. He patted Julian's hand, his fingers trembling slightly. "You're the best thing I ever created, Jules. Never forget that. Whatever happens... remember that beauty survives the winter."
The House of Thorne
Six miles away, in a skyscraper that pierced the clouds like a jagged needle, the air was silent. There was no music here. No laughter. Only the sound of a digital clock ticking on a marble wall.
The Thorne family sat at a dinner table long enough to seat thirty, though only three were present. At the head sat Silas Thorne, a man whose soul had been replaced by cold calculations decades ago. To his left sat Kaelen.
Kaelen cut his steak with surgical precision.
He didn't look at his father. He didn't look at his younger brother.
He looked at the reports on his tablet. On the screen, a surveillance photo of the Vane Gallery was pulled up.
He zoomed in on a young man standing in the window-Julian-laughing at something off-camera.
"The docks in the East End are falling behind, Kaelen," Silas said, his voice like grinding stones. "People are getting comfortable. They think we've gone soft."
Kaelen didn't blink. "I'll handle it tonight. Two men are being made an example of at midnight. The rest will remember who they work for."
"Good," Silas grunted. He glanced at the expensive art hanging on their dining room wall-a piece worth more than a small country. "And the Vane debt? It's past due."
"Arthur Vane is a weak man," Kaelen said, his voice devoid of any empathy.
He tapped the image of Julian on his screen, his finger lingering on the boy's smile for a fraction of a second too long.
"He spent the money on medicine for his late wife and trying to keep his pathetic gallery open. He has no way to pay."
"Then take the building," Silas commanded. "Or take his life. It doesn't matter. The Thorne name is built on the fact that we never lose a cent."
Kaelen wiped his mouth with a silk napkin and stood up. He felt nothing-no guilt, no hesitation. To him, the Vanes were just a line of red ink in a ledger that needed to be erased.
"I'll go to the gallery tomorrow," Kaelen said, his grey eyes turning as hard as flint. "By tomorrow night, the debt will be settled. One way or another."
As he walked out, his heavy boots echoed against the cold marble, a stark contrast to the soft, rhythmic humming of Julian Vane back in his warm, colorful studio.
The world of light was about to collide with the world of shadow.
Set in the cold, dangerous heart of London, this story follows Lio-an innocent student-and Noah-the city's most ruthless Mafia kingpin. It's a world of forbidden nights, deadly blackmail, and a passion that burns hotter than the secrets they're keeping.
I promise you the same tension, the same "alpha" energy, and even higher stakes. Please give it a try and join Noah and Lio on their journey!
