Emily

I had someone cover the rest of my shift at the bar. I don’t know how many times I called Michael, but I did it over and over until I almost arrived home. Adam had no idea what was going on, but I needed to tell him now that the police were getting involved. I’m sure Jack would start playing the part of worried husband too, and he’d tell everyone he was close to that Hana had been taken from him.

I finally sent a text to Michael before I walked into my apartment building: Jack called the police and showed them that video. What the fuck is going on, Michael? Please tell me that Hana is there willingly.

I started walking toward the stairs when my phone began to vibrate in my hand. I answered immediately. “Michael! What the fuck is going on?”

“Jack went to the police?” Michael hissed into the phone. “Real fucking rich of him.”

“Let me talk to Hana,” I insisted. “You’re not giving me any fucking answers, and I’m fucking done.”

There was a pause.

“Fine. But she’s fine, Emily. However Jack made that scene out to look, it’s not what you think. You know how mine and Hana’s sex life is,” he said lightly.

I rolled my eyes. I wish I didn’t.

“Put her on the phone, Michael,” I ordered.

There was a long pause before I finally heard Hana’s voice.

“Em, hey,” she croaked out; it sounded like she had been crying all day.

“Hana, please tell me you’re okay. Please tell me you’re there on your own volition.”

Hana let out a little laugh. “Emily, I have no idea anymore.”

“What the fuck does that mean?” I shouted angrily into the phone—I had had enough of this go-around with them.

“Tell Jack we’re in Cos Cob in a white townhouse by the school—”

The phone cut off.

Holy fucking shit. Hana was fucking taken against her will? And she wanted me to tell Jack where they were? Had she been with Jack willingly this whole fucking time? My mind was officially blown, but I didn’t have time to overthink things. I immediately dialed Jack as I stood in the stairwell of my apartment building. He answered after one ring.

“I just talked to Hana. She wanted me to tell you she’s in a white townhouse in Cos Cob by the school. That’s in Greenwich, near her parent’s house. The call ended before she could finish talking,” I blurted into the phone quickly.

Jack sighed. “Fuck! Anything else?”

I shook my head, as if he could see. “No. That’s all I got.”

“Okay. Thanks, Em.” Calling me by my nickname? Did he trust me now? Did I trust him?

“Let me go with you,” I asserted. “I know the area. I could help you find it.”

“No,” he replied quickly. “I have to do this myself. If he’s dangerous, I don’t want anyone else in his cross hairs.”

I never imagined Michael being violent before, but I was starting to see him in a whole new light and it was terrifying. And now Jack was the knight in shining armor? I felt like I was in the twilight zone.

“At least tell the police. Tell them you have some hint of where they are,” I pleaded.

“No. I can handle this, Emily. I’ll let you know what’s going on when I’ve gotten to Hana. Thanks for your help,” he said then hung up.

I looked down at my phone and began to sob. Everything I thought I knew was crumbling beneath me. Maybe Hana had been with Jack willingly this whole time. Maybe she was not in any danger with him. What about before, when she told me and Michael that Jack had drugged her and took her to his loft and threatened all of us? Was that true—was it still true? I had so many questions that I wasn’t sure would ever be answered. All I knew was that my cousin was in danger, yet again, and it was completely out of my hands.
