25. River

The drive to campus was thick with so much sexual tension I could cut it with a knife. The guys didn”t say a word as we piled into Tate’s Chiron. Natalia had a knowing smirk on her face. She was standing right outside the car with her hands on her hips.

I laughed, pushing the door open and climbing out of the car. It was not a graceful exit, the car was so low to the ground, I practically crawled out of it.

“Hey, girl,” I said as I got up. Brushing the snow off of me and fixing my hair. She raised a perfectly plucked brow at me before glancing to the two men climbing out of the car behind me.

I released a sarcastic laugh, “I really need to get a new car.”

“I might be able to help.”

I looked over to see Jax walking over to us. I smiled at him as he made his way over to our group.

My smile quickly fell as Kai had the front of his shirt in his grasp. Quicker than I could blink, Kai brought his fist back and slammed it into Jax’s face.

“Nikolai, what the fuck?” I yelled, running over to get between them before he could punch Jax again.

“You can”t go around punching people, Kai.” I scolded him like a child. What else was I supposed to do? This was now the second time he has beat Jax up. I was starting to think that having multiple mates wouldn’t work after all.

When I gave Kai another glare, he finally released his hold on Jax’s shirt. I turned to face him as he smoothed down the front of his shirt and wiped the blood from his lip with the back of his hand.

I saw red and whirled around on the asshole, poking a finger into his chest. This shit needed to end right now. It was either all of them, or none of them. There was no way I could choose, so they needed to start getting along.

“Nikolai Augustine, you need to stop punching people just because you don’t like them. Jax is my mate, too. You need to accept that because he”s not going anywhere. My dragon won’t allow it. So, if you can’t handle that, then you have no place in my horde.”

My heart broke as I spat out those words, but I needed to make myself perfectly clear. There would be no fighting amongst my mates, I couldn’t handle it. Our life was already a shit show, and I didn’t need fighting between the men that were fated to be with me.

“He walked away from you and let the hunter get to you, my star. He deserves so much more than that, and he knows it.” Kai said, glaring at Jax over my shoulder.

I pulled against my hair. These men were fucking unbearable. “It wasn’t his fault, Kai. He thought campus was safe, just like the rest of us did.”

I glared at him, daring him to say another word. I was surprised when it was Jax who spoke up.

“He”s right, ma lune. I should have walked you to class instead of leaving you alone.”

I turned to look at him, seeing the sadness in his eyes. He dabbed at his lip, now thick and swollen.

“I will never forgive myself for leaving you like I did, but I promise to make it up to you every day. Starting with this.” He held up a pair of keys with a big blue and purple bow on it. It was the same exact color of my dragon and my face paled.

“Jax…” I trailed off, not knowing how to approach the subject. The keys were begging me to take them and see what vehicle they belonged to. But, my mind was telling me no. I couldn’t accept a new car from him. It was too much.

“I don’t expect anything in return from you, River. I just know it”s not easy not having your own vehicle, so I wanted to get you a new one. No strings attached. Even if you decide I’m not worthy of being your mate, I want you to have it. So, please.” He thrust the keys in my direction, a pleading look on his face.

“That’s too much, Jax. I can’t.” I clenched my fists at my sides, not trusting myself to not snatch the keys from his hands.

“Fuck, ma lune. Just let me do this for you, please. Take the godsdamned car.” He flipped his hand, the keys now sitting in his palm instead of dangling from his fingers.

I couldn’t resist any longer. I took a step toward him and plucked the keys from his open palm. A gush of air whooshed out of his chest as his shoulders fell. When he looked up to meet my eyes, I was taken aback by the raw emotion he was showing me.

“Thank you,” I told him, taking another step forward and placing a kiss on his cheek. My belly fluttered at the sweet gesture. I looked back to his eyes and my heart felt like it exploded. Hope shinned bright in his amber gaze among all the other emotions swirling in his beautiful pools.

I gave him a bright smile before looking down at the new keys. I felt giddy, like a kid on Christmas as I spun around, hitting the alarm, trying to find out what car they belonged to.

My eyes lit up as a midnight blue Corvette Stingray started going off three cars down. I squealed as I ran over to the beautiful car. As I got closer, I saw the speckles of silver dancing in the paint. The entire car looked like it was covered in twinkling stars. My mouth dropped open as I ran my hand along the hood.

“I guess I did good then?” Jax said, stepping up behind me.

I spun around, throwing my arms around him. His body tensed up in surprise at my sudden show of affection. He only hesitated a moment before wrapping his around me in return.

“You did perfect. It’s beautiful. Seriously, thank you so much, Jax,” I told him, letting the pure gratitude I felt show in my voice.

“Maybe later you can take me for a ride.” He whispered into my hair. I knew he meant a ride in the car, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to fuck with him a little bit.

I jerked back so I could see his face, leaving my arms looped around his shoulders. I put the best horrified look on my face, trying like hell to push down the giggle trying to explode out of me.

“I thought you said no strings attached?” I asked in a horrified tone.

I watched as the smile slipped from his face, replaced with fear. He began stumbling over his words. “That’s not…fuck, River…I didn’t mean it like that.”

I don’t know where the sudden urge came from, but I kissed him. Putting him out of his misery and effectively shutting up his chaotic mess of an explanation. It was a brief kiss, but got the job done. I pulled back slightly, my lips brushing against his.

“I know what you meant, Jax.”

“What am I going to do with you?” He smiled, glancing down at my mouth before meeting my eyes again.

“Hopefully a bunch of things that don’t involve clothes.” I pecked him on the lips again before breaking out of his hold. He groaned behind me as I snickered to myself. Yup, fucking with these men was my new favorite game to play.

Nat caught up to me on our way to class, bumping into my shoulder. “So, you and Jax?”

I rolled my eyes, “I don’t know, Nat. I mean I wanna give him a chance to prove himself.”

I needed to get to know him before I threw him to the curb. Maybe I was wrong, and he was nothing like his father. He”s been nothing but nice to me since day one, and other than the hunters, nothing bad has happened. He could have told his dad about me, but surely I wouldn’t still be here if he did. I knew Killigan would come for me the second he knew where to find me.

“I still don’t like the chienne,” she said with a scowl on her face.

“I know.”

We took our seats in class a moment before Knox came into the room. I squirmed in my seat, trying to get comfortable with my soaked panties. I would find a way to make Tate and Kai pay for this. He crossed his arms, leaning against his desk and scanned over the room, looking at the half dozen hands raised.

“Good, so as a lot of you know, it is daylight out right now and the vampires are still here. For those of you that don’t know, it is because they don’t get burned in the sun. A lot of the myths and legends you hear about supernaturals were made up by the very creatures themselves.”

Knox walked around his desk to pull out his laptop and open it.

“Vampires were the ones that came up with the myth that they burn in the sun. They also made people believe they cannot go into churches. These are all rumors started by the vampires themselves. They did this to make it easier for them to blend in with the humans. The only myth about them that is true, is that they cannot enter a home unless invited by someone that lives there.” Knox told the class, putting a picture from a page of an old book up on the screen behind him.

I was fascinated by his lecture, I never knew vampires were the ones that started the myth, I always thought it was the humans.

I shifted in my seat, groaning at how slick my panties were.

I watched as his pupils dilated, his mouth parted slightly. “My favorite color is red.” Knox said in a daze, his eyes trained on Holden the entire time. As soon as Holden stepped away from him and broke eye contact his eyes widened. He looked around in confusion for a moment before shaking his head.

“And that, students, is how vampires glamorize people. Holden obviously did an innocent glamor for show, but they can be far worse. They can also be lengthy. Holden’s glamor broke when he broke eye contact with me. But, I’ve seen vampires hold people in a glamor for years.”

Holden walked off the small raised platform and returned to his seat.

“Have you ever seen a vampire glamorize someone?” Tate whispered in my ear.

“No.”

I stepped up to his desk, clearing my throat and waiting for him to acknowledge me. He typed a few more things on his laptop before closing it and looking up at me.

“I just rescheduled my afternoon class. So, I’m free for the next three hours if you would like to have that one-on-one session that you missed.” He stood, placing his laptop in his bag and slinging it over his shoulder.
