Prologue Sebastian

If someone had asked me what the hell I was doing there, I could’ve given eighty thousand different answers, and none of them would’ve been totally true.

The work demanded so much of me that I sometimes asked myself why I continued to do it, why I didn’t just quit, leave that world for good. But when I thought about what it would mean to throw it all away, I simply silenced my conscience and got on with it.

The other men there would’ve killed me without thinking twice if they even suspected my doubts. But for years my mind had been my stronghold, and I knew how to control my thoughts so that no one could so much as glimpse the reservations I sometimes felt.

In the world I run in… doubts can mean death.

From a distance, I checked that my aim was lined up. No one was covering me; I was on my own… although more than fifteen men surrounded me.

As soon as shots began firing, I knew everything had gone to hell. But one single shot would change absolutely everything.
