I took the subway.

I didn’t need to. Or want to. Shouldn’t have, some would argue.

Grayson Stryker? Heir to half of Manhattan? On the train? During the busiest time of the day—or the week, really.

What the fuck was I doing?

Hell if I knew.

But I waved a taxi off and walked two blocks in the August murk anyway. I descended, diving into a crush of Wall Street’s finest. I lingered on the hot platform and bitched internally about the insufferable weather, the putrid smell. My life, generally.

I chose the third car.

“Chose” is probably a strong word. In reality, I didn’t think about which car to get on for even a millisecond. But doors squealed open, and I stepped forward. Onto a car.

That car.

Why didn’t I get my phone out? Why didn’t I find a seat in a corner and close my eyes?

Instead, I stood in the center and held the polished pole. I looked left.

And there she was.
