Chapter 1

Being the oldest brother of four sisters was a real fun way to learn that I would only ever get what I wanted if they would allowed it.

After stealing my nail polish stash for the third time last night, I just gave it over to Stacy, the youngest, with a scowl.

Once I had given in and told her to keep them, she jogged back down the hall to her room with a wicked grin on her face that told me she knew exactly what she was doing.

How could a thirteen-year-old be that manipulative already? Brat.

After moving out at eighteen to get away from the chaos and find my own two feet in the city of Edinburgh, the fucking huge global pandemic forced me to move home again.

Was I understanding that it was an awful time, and that I was lucky to have my family healthy and close by? Fuck yeah, obviously.

Did I want to fight all my sisters who had grown up to be taller and more muscular than me in the 5 years since I had moved out? Fuck yeah, obviously.

The smell of French toast wafted down the hall and struck me straight in my stomach. Fuck, I loved my Ma’s French toast. With cinnamon sugar, salted butter, and syrup? Jesus, I was going to make myself hard thinking about food.

Rolling out of my squeaky childhood single bed and into a hoodie and sweats, I glanced at the unchanged walls of my room.

It was still an odd purple colour, posters adorning the ceiling of my favourite singers, actors, and movies.

I was pretty sure my parents were keeping it as a shrine instead of redecorating it into a guest bedroom, but who was I to judge?

I loved that they hadn’t removed the four James McAvoy posters from the back of my door that I’d drawn hearts all over. Moving quickly, I make my way to the kitchen to grab breakfast before the four mighty sister-bros show up and nick it.

“Anything?” Ma asks as she stands over the sink, eating a croissant. I give her a kiss on the cheek as I grab a plate from the cupboard by her head.

She was referring to my lack of employment since coming home in February. It was now August, and I still had zero work plans. I’d kindly reminded her that the whole of hospitality had closed down just like the rest of the world, thus ending my short-lived career as a pastry chef.

As sympathetic as my parents were, they were also obviously sick of my arse roaming their house every day. Da had only just gone back to wearing more than his tiny y-fronts around us after the five of us whinged until he did.

“You could eat that here at the table over a plate you know, crumbs don’t need to just go down the sink,” I say to her as I tuck into my delicious scented brekkie that’s been laid out across the 8-seater dining table.

Vanilla mascarpone, macerated berries, and maple syrup sit in various-sized bowls with the French toast stacked on a huge glass platter right in the centre.

I use my hoodie sleeve to mop the drool from my mouth before plating up.

“Yeah, smarty pants I know. But Katie is so messy when she eats that I am trying not to make any more mess than need be before she comes down like a tornado,” she states with a mock scowl.

“Oh yeah, how could I forget that after sharing a room with her for 3 years.”

“Yes, we know Freddie. We were cruel parents, making you share a room with your sister in this big, lovely house you have with a pool in it. What a sad start to life you had,” she teases as she grabs a tea towel and wipes the residue croissant on it.

“Watch it, Ma. Wouldn’t want your crumb-phobia to be triggered while I’m staying here and accidentally spill food in every room at all times of the day while I’m jobless,” I threaten with a cheeky smirk.

“Do I need to spank you? Or are you too old?” My Da embarrassingly calls as he makes his way into the kitchen with his work gear on.

“Ew, Da,” I make a face to let him know he was being disgusting by saying the word spank.

“Or maybe I’ll save it all for your mum,” he laughs as he tackles Ma from behind, kissing her neck and making her giggle as he squeezes her waist.

“EWW, didn’t you hear me? Fuck this, I’m going to finish this in my room,” I yell as I stand with my plate filling it with more berries and another slice of toast, but my attitude has gone unnoticed as they whisper and giggle to one another in their embrace.

Their eyes have only ever been for each other.

God, they were sickly sweet. I never wanted that.

Nope. Not for me. I wanted, well for one, I wanted to be railed by a guy and not be doing the railing and two; I was hoping to get railed soon because after four months at home; I wasn’t able to hook up because we lived in a house in butt fuck county.

So, unless I wanted to be in a relationship with the wildlife; I wasn’t going to be getting what I wanted anytime soon.
