Chapter 28

“H ow’s married life treating you this morning, Mrs Jameson?” I ask Cora as I drop into the seat beside her. Lily is on her other side, refusing to look up from her plate due to the ginger who’s sitting on her other side. If looks could kill, I’d happily flay him alive here and now.

“Oh, you know, with orgasms aplenty.” She smirks as we watch our men approach from the other side of the room. Damn, what a fine sight Logan makes. Hair braided back, sleeves rolled up, tattoos and arm veins on full display. Is it too soon to disappear back to our room for a round two?

“That’s what we like to hear. Also, I can confirm Logan was worth the wait if you know what I mean,” I say with a pointed look and get a squeal in return just in time for the boys to make it to the table. I would laugh at the confusion on Owen’s face if it weren’t for Logan’s concentration on his phone. And the smirk dancing across his features as he reads whatever has him so captivated. Bile starts creeping up on me as thoughts of what could be getting that kind of reaction race in.

“Everything okay, ladies?” Logan finally looks up from his phone as he slides into a seat beside Matt, opposite from me. Smirk firmly in place as he kicks back in his chair and goes back to looking at his phone.

“Just perfect. But Lily here was just saying she needs to powder her nose, so if you’ll excuse us,” I say and grab the girls by their hands, hightailing it to the bathroom.

“Okay, spill. What’s going on?” I ask Lily as soon as the door is closed behind us. Maybe if I focus on her drama, I can forget about mine for a second.

“Huh? Nothing.” She looks guilty as hell and won’t meet my eyes. I swear if she slept with Matt again last night, I am going to kidnap her and bring her to Glasgow.

“Cora?” I ask, turning to her, only to see her guarding the door with her arms crossed as she studies our friend.

“She hasn’t said a word all morning. Disappeared not long after you last night.”

“Listen, I'll tell you both when I can, okay? But nothing’s wrong, I pinkie promise,” she pleads with us, holding out her pinkie. Looking over at Cora in question, I follow her lead and link pinkies. You can’t break a pinkie promise after all.

“Now. What the hell is going on with you and Logan?” Cora turns on me with her eyebrows in her hairline.

“Well, let’s just say you weren’t the only one consummating your marriage last night,” I say before fidgeting with the hem of my dress, nerves creeping in as I ask them something that’s been eating at me all night. “If it wasn’t good for him, he’d tell me, right?”

“What are you on about?” Lily frowns.

“Babe, what’s going on?” Cora asks me, abandoning her post at the door to come closer.

“Cut the shit. I know if I clocked his behaviour out there, you two sure as hell would have as well. What if he’s going back on his word about having a mistress?” I can barely choke out the words without wanting to throw up, and the burning in the back of my eyeballs has me wanting to shake some sense into myself. We don’t let men have this much power over us. Shoulders back, smile in place, and fuck the noise.

“Trust me, his mind will be blown about the fact you’re all his. And if he had any complaints, he would have voiced them. Men aren’t anywhere near as shy about this shit as we are.” Cora’s tone should have me nodding along and relaxing, but Lily’s silence speaks volumes.

“If he’s out there, making plans to fuck you over, I will kill him.” Jumping at the deep voice that’s out of place in the girls’ bathroom, I look behind Cora to see Cole in the doorway looking downright murderous.

“How the hell did you get in here?”

“Owen was worried. Now how about we go back out there and show that husband of yours just who he’s messing with?” As quick as his need for violence arose, it’s replaced with his trademark smirk and with an arm tossed around my shoulders, he leads us back out into the fray with my girls on our heels.

“You’re awfully quiet today,” Logan comments as we pull up to the compound a few all too short hours later. Coming back to the table with Cole glued to me had Logan putting his phone away and pinning us under his gaze, and while part of me wanted to bask in his attention, the constant vibration of his phone soon squashed that desire.

“Just lost in thought,” I answer as we make our way inside to a series of barks and meows.

“Aw, did my babies miss me,” I coo, dropping to my knees to hug them as they come running. The love from animals is unmatched. No matter what’s going on, these fur babies will always be there to offer comfort and love and ask no questions.

“I think it’s safe to say they did. Rocky here laid outside your door whimpering the whole time,” Peter tells us as he greets us.

“Everything else go smoothly?” Logan asks as he closes the door and comes to stand at my shoulder.

“Yes. It was quiet, there’s an Old Guard meeting you need to attend at twelve tomorrow but other than that, nothing of note has happened.” Peter claps Logan on the back and makes his exit.

“Who is this Old Guard? I’ve been meaning to ask but wasn’t sure if it was my place.” Getting to my feet with Teddy in my arms, we head into the living room.

“I’m of the opinion there’s no point hiding shit from you. As long as it’s not actively going to harm you, I’ll tell you pretty much anything. The Old Guard is made up of the head of five families, and they vote on a lot of shit that happens here to give the facade of a democracy.”

“Sounds fake if you ask me.”

“That’s because it pretty much is.” He snorts as he takes a seat on the sofa, Rocky jumping up onto his lap as I sit beside them.

“Now do you feel like telling me what’s been wrong today? Do you regret last night?” He pins me under his gaze.

“No, it’s not that. It was good for you too, wasn’t it?” I peek up at him from under my lashes, fighting the blush that wants to take over my face.

“Was it good? It was fucking amazing; I’ve been thinking about it all day. What’s put that doubt in your head?” He takes a grip of my chin and tilts my head up to meet his gaze.

“I’m not stupid, Logan. You’ve been glued to your phone all fucking day like it’s the hottest thing in the room. If you think I will just happily sit beside you while you sext—”

“Princess, what the actual fuck are you on about?! Last night was the single hottest experience of my life. Like hell am I going to throw that away. Which is exactly what I’ve been texting Alex about. There’s been no fucking sexting going on. I’ll wipe those doubts clean out of your brain if it’s the last thing I do,” he growls before wrapping his hand around my throat, tilting my head back and claiming my mouth as his.
