Chapter Thirty-One

The bards who wereimprisoned by the former king played music for the ball. They played my songs, freely and without fear of reprisal. Commoners and nobles, dragons and Faligreans danced together. Indigo was barely crowned and already she led her people into the future.

Indigo squeezed my arms and kissed my cheeks. “I couldn’t have done any of this without you. I mean that. You were the spark I needed to set it all aflame. Without you I’d still be tiptoeing around in secret meetings.”

I scoffed. “Maybe. But you would have succeeded on your own, eventually.”

She shook her head with a smile. “I’d like to think so, but I’m not so sure.”

“Does it matter? We won.”

She laughed. “That we did. And I’m grateful for your willingness to work with the dragons and uproot your home.”

I shrugged. “My home is with my kindreds. I will miss you and Elora though.”

Tears glistened in her eyes. “And we’ll miss you.”

“Go. You have hundreds of people who want to greet you. We aren’t leaving for a week, so there’s plenty of time for goodbyes.”

She squeezed my hands and kissed my cheek. “I’m so glad it was you who was chosen as Aster’s kindred. I couldn’t imagine a better sister.”

I smiled after her as she was swallowed by the lines of well-wishers, people wanting a moment with the new queen. Whist tugged me onto the dance floor and swept me into a waltz.

“How long do we have to stay here?” I was ready to go. There was a very different party I wanted to go to than the one we were currently trapped in.

Whist grinned down at me. “Whenever you’re ready to head back to our rooms to our new bed, you just let us know. I’ll steal some food to smuggle back and we can spend the rest of the night celebrating together.”

The song changed to a faster one and my other kindreds joined us, the six of us dancing in a rather awkward circle.

“We shouldn’t stay?” I asked.

“We were just bound together, I think people will understand we want to consummate it.” Sky wiggled his eyebrows with a wicked smirk on his tempting lips.

“I really want to try out the new bed. I had all my toys brought over as well.” Aster winked.

Heat flooded me.

“Toys? What sorts of toys?” Bastian asked.

The prince nudged the dragon. “I think you’ll enjoy them. Do dragons not have toys?”

Bastian frowned. “Of course we have toys. But I’m curious about Faligrean ones. I want to know if they’re different from ours or similar.”

“Ever the scholar, eh?” Sky shook his head with a snort.

“What’s wrong with that?” Bastian asked as he spun me.

Aster grabbed my hand and dragged me into his arms, swaying us to the music. “There are more fun ways to enjoy those things than to study them.”

“Except I study them by using them.” Bastian’s grin matched Sky’s in wickedness.

“Should we leave one at a time so it isn’t completely obvious that we’re escaping early?” I asked.

Aster shrugged. “Who cares?”

“Shouldn’t you? You’re the prince.” I aimed the words over Sky’s shoulder since he stole me next.

“It’s a new Faligrey.”

“That it is.”

Sky dipped me low as the song came to a close. “Come on, then. Whist, go get the food. We’ll need a lot to build up our strength to get through the rest of the night.”

I laughed as Sky and Aster grabbed my hands and tugged me towards the doors. It was time to really celebrate my bonds with my kindred souls and start our new lives together.
