Complex Fire, the fire that destroyed The Briars—home of the late tech billionaire Colin Wren—was covered by the Boston Globe, NECN, and the rest of the regional press. The blaze began in the basement, where old, frayed wiring ignited some unsafe

coming down in fast white flakes, and they were a while getting there. Then they couldn’t get up the drive—an electrical short

had killed the power to the gate. The fire crews needed nearly ten minutes, working with the Jaws of Life, before they had

it open and could drive up to the fully engulfed manor.

When the fire trucks had disappeared up the driveway, the pickup parked in the trees across the road turned on its headlights,

and Gwen drove home.
