CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

LUKA

Buzzzz.

I started awake, my mind a blur from how hard I'd been sleeping. I tried to move, not like I thought I could. Not when Sydney and I were scrunched up on the couch with Felix and Alfie on each side. I looked down at our omega, the smile taking over my whole face. She'd worked hard for us over this cycle, creating the life and family I dreamed of, I hoped. And now, she was out cold, barely making it through the beginning of the movie before her body went limp against mine and her breathing grew heavy.

I thought about waking her up and moving her to her nest, but she was peaceful here. Peaceful and perfect.

Buzzzz.

I sat up straighter, registering the chime of our doorbell. Who the hell would be at our door?

I was slow to remove my limbs from the bodies that surrounded me on the small space, but somehow, I managed to untangle our bodies without waking a soul. When I stood, I shook out my body, trying to wake it up and stop the tingling that ran through my nerves.

Rap.

Rap.

Rap.

Whoever was there was impatient, not taking no for an answer. It annoyed me. How dare someone come to my home, interrupt my time with my unit, all while my omega was recovering from her first heat cycle?

I stomped to the front door and pulled it open, not bothering to look through the door peephole at who stood on the other side. "What?"

"Alpha." The woman, Mrs. Harriet, addressed me formally. Just looking at her reminded me how much I despised her and the company she worked for. The way my omega was treated, the lack of preparation they gave my woman, the sheer audacity to show up here in my home, made me frown deeper.

"Mrs. Harriet. I don't recall inviting you to my home."

"You didn't, but?—"

"I also don't recall a phone call in preparation for this meeting," I growled.

"There wasn't one. I just thought you'd like the news in person." Her smile was forced; my disdain was not.

"I'm not sure if you realized this, but any news I receive, I would never want from you or your organization." I leaned against the doorframe, not wanting to admit that even I, the alpha, was feeling a little weak from all the mating we'd done. I wanted to be back on that couch with my omega, not here entertaining this woman with whatever bullshit she was about to spout.

"I understand, Alpha. But after you left, I did some digging and contacted some other agencies, and I was able to obtain you what you asked. I thought I would hand deliver her for you today as well as collect?—"

"What I asked?" I was confused.

A tiny hand touched my back right as Mrs. Harriet stepped aside, her hands sweeping to the side to show me an omega that was just like the one we had asked for. Just like the one we didn't want. "Your new omega, Alpha. Just like you asked for."

Behind me, Sydney gasped. Then her hand dropped from my back before she pulled away, disappearing. I hated the distance that formed between us, hated this woman for invading my home and my private time with my mate. I glared at Mrs. Harriet, trying to keep my composure when I wanted nothing more than to explode at her, tear her to pieces on my doorstep, and let the other omega watch just what I was capable of. She'd hate me for it, I was sure. But my goal was never to impress this omega I didn't want, only the omega that belonged to me.

I gritted my teeth as I looked upon them, then spoke. "I do not want this omega."

"Excuse me? This is what you asked for."

"No." I shook my head. "I've got an omega."

"And I'm more than happy to take her back to the industries." Mrs. Harriet smiled wide, like she thought I'd prefer it.

"You will not touch my omega," I growled.

"I am providing you with what you asked for." Her voice became stern, too damn audacious for a mere beta, but I let it slide because clearly, she didn't know better.

"You will watch your tone around an alpha, Beta." I inhaled deeply. "I understand that on a form, I had asked for an omega that fits her description. However, my unit and I can all agree that the omega we have is the perfect match for us. I mean no disrespect for this omega. I am positive she will make someone's unit very happy, but she is not for us."

"You, sir, made such an issue in my office when you were not provided with the omega you requested," she pointed out.

"The omega you called me to your office to collect? I'll admit, I did. And I apologize for my behavior. But the omega provided is more than adequate. In fact, she's perfect. And now that I know perfection, I will not trade her for less."

Maybe that was an asshole thing to say, and I didn't mean to hurt the girl’s feelings by it, but she was not my omega. Therefore, she was less.

"I—"

"I'm sorry you felt the need to travel all this way for this meeting. Had you made a phone call, all of this could have been avoided. You will know for future endeavors." I paused for a moment. "Goodbye."

The door slammed in her face, and I ignored the knocking on the other side. I said what I had to say, and I meant it. I would not abandon my omega. No. She belonged to us, and I was not so heartless to trade her in for a model that was only perfect by society’s standards.

I entered the living room, searching the area for my omega. "Where's Sydney?"

Alfie blinked a few times, just waking up. "Isn't she with you?"

"No. I mean, she was, but she got upset about Mrs. Harriet at the door and she left," I explained.

"Mrs. Harriet at the door? Why? We paid them in full." Felix sat up, running a hand through his ruffled hair.

"She brought us a new omega," I growled, still angry over the entire situation.

"A new omega." Alfie's attention was suddenly alert. "We don't need a new omega. Sydney is perfect."

"I know that. You both know that. But Mrs. Harriet felt the need to try to push a new omega on us, right in front of Sydney too."

"Shit." Felix stood. "She is probably in her nest."

I hoped so. I may have spent the last few days showing her just how perfect she was to us, but I was fully willing to spend the next few more driving my point home. There was no other girl for us; no other omega would do. They wouldn't feel right. Their skin would be off. Their softness wouldn’t mold to our bodies like Sydney's did effortlessly.

We walked down the hall, calling her name, though she didn't answer. When we reached the room, her nest door was open slightly. I stalked forward, knocking once before pushing it open. "Sydney?"

She wasn't there. Our omega wasn't in her nest. I wasn't sure what that meant, but inside, I felt the torture of its meaning. I stepped inside, spied a paper on the pallet, and picked it up, reading it out loud.

I can’t go back there. Sorry.

-Sydney

I felt ill, sick with the knowledge that our omega left before we talked, left before she learned that I'd trade my own heart before I risked hurting hers. I turned to my unit, my voice shaking. "She's gone."

She was gone and it was all my fault because I didn't convince her she was wanted. Didn't show her just how important she was to us, and now... now I might have lost her.
