Chapter 14

Kate

“Hi, I’m Kate.” I stared at the man at the gate. I didn’t know him. But that wasn’t surprising. It wasn’t like I was good friends with the Sons. Only a few of them I even knew by name or had even spoken to properly, such as Pocket and Duke.

The man looked at me, puffing on the cigarette dangling between his lips. He had on the same leather cut that they all wore, but his said prospect on it. I knew what that meant, the lowest on the totem pole.

He continued to stare at me. I shifted from foot to foot, my heels pinching my toes as I wondered if this was a mistake. I knew Legacy was busy, but when he hadn’t turned up at the arranged time, it had popped into my head to surprise him. I was starting to doubt that decision now. Glancing behind me, I frowned. The street was empty. The cab I had taken had already disappeared. I cursed myself for not asking the driver to wait.

“You’re Legacy’s woman,” the prospect said at last. His eyes, which had been lingering on my tits, snapped up to my face. “His old lady.”

“Yeah.” That wasn’t exactly true, not yet at least, but it was a small thing to quibble over. I flashed him a smile. “I wanted to surprise him,” I added.

Again, the prospect”s eyes darted down to my breasts. He ground out the cigarette under his boot and promptly took another from the pack, letting it dangle from his lips for a second as he stared at me. “Legacy is at church.”

It was a funny word to describe a meeting of bikers, but Legacy had filled me in on the lingo. My smile never faltered. “I know.” I averted my eyes for a second before meeting his again. “I wanted to surprise him.” I winked.

Throwing back his head, the prospect laughed, and I couldn’t blame him. I was terrible at this.

“It’s a good job you’re a hottie because you can’t flirt, Kate.” He shook his head, moving towards the chain-link gate and sliding it open just enough for me to squeeze through. I was barely in before he shut it again. “Go surprise your man. I expect with everything that is happening with Prez, Legacy will need it. You know where his room is?”

I nodded, lifting my hand in a wave as I made my way across the lot. There were more bikes than had been there on my last visit, noticeably more. I weaved my way in between them. Not really paying much attention.

The clubhouse itself was quiet. All the chapter members were in their meeting. A gaggle of club girls gathered in one corner of the common room. One of them waved. I smiled but didn’t stop.

Legacy’s room was at the end of one of the ground floor corridors. The door wasn’t locked, so it opened the second I twisted the handle.

His space was as clean and orderly as it always was, except for one item. I stared at it for a second. My brain didn’t want to comprehend what I was seeing. My heart hammered as I reached out and picked up the lacy red bra. It wasn’t mine. I didn’t own anything so expensive and whoever had left this was far better endowed than I was.

My stomach turned.

“Legacy, is that you?” A woman’s voice called out from the bathroom. The sound of water stopped as the shower turned off. “I’ll be right out. Just give me a second.”

A woman appeared in the doorway. Her body was covered down to her knees by a giant fluffy towel. She was beautiful. All wild, curly, dark hair and what looked like golden eyes.

Startled, she froze. “Hello?”

I couldn’t stop staring at her. She was too beautiful. Too perfect. Of course, she was in Legacy’s room. She was the kind of woman a man like Legacy should be spending time with. I had no business being with him, no business at all.

Finally, I found my voice. Sudden tears made it thick. Angrily, I rubbed my cheeks. “Sorry, my mistake.” In my bag, my phone began to ring. I ignored it. Spinning on my heel, I tried to backtrack. “I shouldn’t have come.” My voice broke, and a sob broke free from my lips. Tears made my vision blurry and in my haste to get as far away as possible, my ankle went over.

The woman caught me by the elbow, steadying me. Glancing down at her hand, I was almost blinded by the giant diamond on her finger.

She was married.

Not that it seemed to matter to her or Legacy. But then was I surprised? He was a biker and she was…

She was smiling at me in an open, friendly way. “You must be Kate.” Her eyes grew soft. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

I didn’t know what to say, so I said nothing. Righting myself, I took another step away. And then another.

I needed to get away. To be alone and not have how stupid it had been to trust Legacy staring back at me.

He was a player. And I was a fool.

There was no other way to look at it. I’d let myself be fooled by his good looks and charm. I didn’t even care that I had given him my body. It was my heart that worried me. I’d let him in and he had been using me. I knew that a lot of the bikers didn’t think twice about having girlfriends and bits on the side, but I wasn’t the kind of woman that would ever be okay with sharing.

“Hey, Kate, stop,” the woman called out after me. “I think you have the wrong idea.”

I could hear the sound of her bare feet coming up fast behind me. But I didn’t turn.

“What’s going on here?” Legacy appeared like some kind of dark, avenging angel. His eyes moved from me to the woman behind me. His eyebrows knitted together in confusion.

“Why the hell are you running around in a towel?”

His question wasn’t for me. It was for her. Like she was more important.

“Excuse me.” I tried to step past him and almost made it before he stepped in front of me again.

“Where are you going?” He dropped his eyes to mine. He looked confused.

“Home. I need to go home.”

“Why has something happened?” He reached out, and I had to step backwards before he could touch me. I didn’t want him to touch me. “Is it Conner?”

“I think she’s got the wrong idea.”

Legacy’s head snapped up to stare over my shoulder, and then he began to laugh. “Kate? Are you running away because…” He couldn’t get the words out. He was laughing so hard.

I wanted to punch him, push him, do something so that he stopped mocking me.

“Elliot.”

I closed my eyes for a second. She had called him by his name. His actual name. That meant they were close.

I was a damn fool

I pushed at his shoulder.

“Hey.” Legacy moved, grabbing my wrist to stop me in my tracks. “What do you think is going on here?”

Ignoring him, I stared down at the hand he was gripping me with. “Let go of me.”

How dare he touch me with the hand that had touched her with? “Let go of me. I’m going home.”

“She”s my sister, Kate.” Again, he lifted his eyes. “El, help me out here.”

El? I frowned.

“Hey, I’m Elodie.” The dark-haired beauty stepped forward, one hand outstretched as the other one clutched the towel closed. “And you’re Kate.”

“Elodie?”

“Elodie Turner.” The woman grinned. “Happily married and a little sister to this one. It’s great to meet you.”

“I…um, oh.” I wanted to say I felt like a fool, but that was pretty obvious. “Hi, nice to meet you.” I tried to smile, looking at her properly. She looked familiar. I just wasn’t sure where I had seen her face before. “I’m…um…”

“I’m going to get sorted.” Elodie gave me a dazzling smile. “I need to call Jax and go and see my dad, but I hope we can get to know each other soon.”

“I’d like that.”

“Brother, don’t let her go. She’s far too pretty for you and you won’t find anyone better.”

Legacy wrapped his arm around my waist, drawing me into his side. “Don’t plan on letting her go anywhere. Please get some clothes on. Jax will do his nut if he finds out you’re walking around here with nothing on.” Legacy chuckled.

“Jax? Jax Turner!” I stared at her. Yeah, that’s why she looked familiar. I had seen her face in photographs online and splashed across papers.

“Yeah, but don’t get her started on the band or she will never stop talking.” Turning me, Legacy led me away from the corridor with the bedrooms on and into the common room. He didn’t say anything until he had led us to the bar.

“I can’t believe your sister is Elodie Turner. Have you met any of Dionysus Rising?” Quickly, I found a spare stool and hoisted myself onto it. “That’s so cool.”

“You don’t trust me.”

Legacy’s voice was angry.

“It’s not that.” In my lap, I clasped my hands together.

“Yeah, it is Kate. You didn’t bother to ask who she was, you just automatically assumed the worst.” He caught my hands in his.

I had nothing to say to that because it was true. My mind had gone straight to the worst case scenario.

“We can’t be together without trust.”

My eyes closed. God. Hearing him say it like that hurt. It felt final. Like a goodbye.

“Ok,” I whispered. “I’ll leave.”

“For fuck’s sake, Kate, that’s not what I meant. I mean trust me. I’m fucking crazy about you.” Half turning to the room full of bikers, he raised his focus. “Hey, assholes!” he shouted until the nearest people turned to stare at him quizzically. “This woman here is amazing and I am head over heels in love with her.”

Blushing, I tried to pull him away. “Legacy, stop.”

I hid my face in his chest, trying to hide my embarrassment, but he didn’t stop.

“If I ever look at another woman, you all have permission to punch me.”

A cheer went up.

“There, sorted. I love you, Kate. I wish you believed me.”

“I want to, it”s just so new and…”

“It’s scary for me as well, Kate. I’ve never been in love before,” he admitted. I lifted my head.

“You mean it, don’t you?”

“Of course I mean it.” He shook his head in disbelief. “What can I do to get you to believe me?” Cocking his head to the side, he grinned. “We could get married.”

Laughing, I shook my head. “You’re crazy.”

“Crazy about you.” He kissed the tip of my nose before moving down to find my lips with his, softly brushing them before withdrawing. “Rain check on the wedding thing then, hey?”

“Definitely.” I curled my hands into his hair, drawing his head down to mine so I could capture his mouth in a much deeper kiss. “I’m sorry I got jealous.”

“Jealousy is normal, Kate, but in the future, ask me first. I”ll always tell you the truth.” One last kiss and he stepped away. “So, as you’ve declined my proposal, can I at least take you to dinner?”

Staring at him for a second, I felt myself melting. I was in love with him. I hadn’t expected it and I sure as hell hadn’t wanted to fall for my husband”s friend, but I had. It was like it was always meant to be, me and him. Two people who missed Paul. Two people who had loved him.

“Kate?” He raised an eyebrow, clearly waiting for my answer.

I nodded, not trusting myself to speak straightaway. “Yeah,” I managed. Tears welled up in my eyes again, but this time they were happy tears. “I would like that. And Legacy? I love you too.”
