Everything was fine until it wasn’t.
The day was sunny, the leaves on the trees above my head were bright green and shining and the road was smooth and dry.
And I lost control anyway.
There was no time to prepare myself or even throw my hands out to break my fall. One second I was happy and the next my face and body were scraping along the road at god knows how many miles an hour.
Pain shot through my cheek but not as much as I thought there would be.
I skidded to a stop. Landing on my side with my arm reaching out above my head. The trees above my head continued to whisper in the breeze. Each leaf sending dancing shadows over my face.
Nothing else.
Just those swaying leaves I could see out of the corner of my eye.
No noise, no pain.
Nothing.
It was like an out of body experience except I wasn’t looking down at myself like some leather cut wearing ghost. Instead, I was trapped in my body. Locked in, unable to move even my eyes.
And those damn leaves kept swaying.
A bird landed on a branch above my head. A tiny brown thing that I didn’t know the name of. I wanted to tell it to shoo. To leave me alone but no sound came out of my lips. I couldn’t even be sure I had moved my lips.
Hell, I couldn’t move anything.
And still, there was no pain.
There was something new though. A tinkering sound like someone was ringing a bell.
Bike.
But even with my brain scrambled inside my skull I knew it wasn’t the kind of bike I was hoping for. After all, why would they have the little bell I used to love to ding ding on my bicycle as a kid?
A bicycle then.
Not great news but it could have been worse. This road was a one track, out of the way route. My favourite one. I knew it like the back of my hand. There were rarely cars out here and if there were, the chances of someone running over my prone body were high.
A bicycle was - well I wasn’t sure what it was but it was something.
There was a clatter and a sharp intake of breath.
And then I saw her.
Or at least I thought I did, I couldn’t be a hundred perfect sure because she looked like a fucking angel. All shimmery and glowing. The sun streaming around her like a halo.
“Are you hurt?” Soft fingers touched my cheek.
Pain erupted through my body. Ignited by her touch and I was burning alive.
I was dying.
Dying with the face of an angel before my eyes…….
