9. Epilogue

Pictures of Mark and me at the gallery spread around town, and I only find out about them from whispers and stares as I’m working a shift at the diner. Mark isn’t bothered by them, so long as nothing explicit leaks, but the only pictures that have surfaced are of Mark spinning me in the middle of the room, lovestruck smiles on our lips as we laugh and kiss in pure bliss.

I suspect that Lucius and his assistant Amelia have something to do with the pictures circulating, but I have no proof, and nothing really changes in my small town life other than idle gossip. I’ve heard a few more rumors about Mark and the night my mother died, but in the end, no matter the truth, I know that Mark will always take care of me. And that’s what matters - our love for each other. Nothing else.

The ring Mark gives me was my mother’s - and he finally admits that he ransacked my parents’ house one afternoon while I was at the diner. Not only did he find my mom’s necklace and engagement ring, but he found pictures of my childhood that I’d forgotten about. Even though things have changed and I no longer have the same family, we put a few of them up around the house to remind us of where we started.

The picture of our last holiday together, the four of us smiling for the camera, sits on our bedside table as a reminder of family bonds. My mother may not be here now, but I know she’s happy for me to have found a man who cares so deeply about my happiness.

We frame my GED and set it up in our office above my own computer setup. Penny’s given me the task of marketing the diner for travelers headed into the city who need a quick bite at a good price, and even though I don’t need my GED for that, having my certificate overhead makes me proud.

I can do anything I put my mind to, and I know that this is only the beginning. I’ve got my whole life ahead of me to figure out what I’d like to do with it.

Mark’s conference call starts and he mutes his mic immediately, spinning around in his chair to pat his lap and beckon me over.

“We can’t keep doing this,” I murmur, walking towards him anyhow. This time, I straddle his hips like he taught me, and lower my center against his hardening length.

“No one’s complained,” he counters, gripping my hips and rolling them in time with his short thrusts. “And I have to keep my girl happy above all else.”

“And what makes your girl happy?” I ask, my eyes rolling back as he thumbs my clit through my shorts. I bite my lip to keep from moaning, and Mark chuckles against my neck.

“A few things come to mind.”

As we rock together and he fills me up completely and my heart pounds in my chest - whole and complete, and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.
