Chapter 45

CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE

Shelby

The click of my room door stirs me.

Hearing soft footsteps head to the base of my bed and the clipboard being lifted, I keep my eyes closed. Just another nurse. I thought it was Leo.

Sheets of paper flip a few times before my chart is placed back where they got it.

I frown. Why aren’t they leaving?

Opening my eyes a little, I start seeing Leo in the seat beside the bed.

“I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“Where were you?” I croak.

A smile pulls at my lips when he reaches for me. I turn my hand for him to take, but he doesn’t take it, his hand dropping back to his own lap.

Leo scrubs his palms against his pant legs.

He can’t even touch me. For what must be the hundredth time this week, my chest heaves.

“Riley wouldn’t settle. She wanted me to stay at the house for a little while.”

Liar.

Turning my face, I look away, unable to keep the tears at bay.

I don’t call him on his lie or ask him to leave. Instead, I cry.

I love him, no matter what.
