CHAPTER 11

Lars

“D ad?” The alarm in Damon’s voice sets me on edge as I rush downstairs to see what’s wrong. “Did you know about this?”

On the noon news show are photos of Ellie and her parents. The broadcasters are speaking about the crimes of Kevin Dawson in Florida and across the southwestern states, with breaking news about four more bodies found in Georgia.

“Motherfucker,” I hiss. We just received this fucking information. How the hell does the news have it already? “I’m going to fucking kill someone.”

“Should you be saying that?” Damon smarts off, and I glare at him. He raises his hands in surrender.

“Go get her,” I say. “You’re already late. But tell her to pack everything. She’s staying here now.” I walk out and call my superiors before he can reply.

“What the fuck happened?” I shout.

I informed my deputy chief about my relationship with Ellie last night, and while he wasn’t on board with the age gap, he said that since we hadn’t done anything until she was introduced as my son’s friend, weeks after our last interaction, there was nothing anyone could do. The only drawback is that her official interactions will now be with Reed Burkhart, the only other man I trust around her.

“We have a leak,” he mutters while cursing and then yelling at someone else.

“No fucking shit. I want to know who, and I’ll be handling the punishment.” Because it’s for damn sure in my department.

“As soon as we have a name, they’re yours,” he promises. “Don’t go off the deep end over this, old friend. You’re already pushing the lines by being involved with this girl. Once the press gets wind of it, they’re going to tear you apart, likely her as well.”

“I won’t. Damon has gone to get her now. She’s got a few exams this week, and then she’ll be out of the spotlight.” I’d like to get her out of the state.

“Has she decided about speaking to her father?”

“I’ll ask her today.”

If she does, everything could be over within a week. She’ll be free to do anything she wants. But if she doesn’t, I’m afraid the press will find ways to hound her until she runs. I’ve seen it one too many times in high-profile cases.

Hanging up with my DC, I pace the kitchen, anxious for Damon and Ellie to arrive home, where I know they’ll both be safe. I should have gone for her myself; however, I didn’t want to make anything worse with this three-ring circus.

The phone buzzing in my hand forces my feet to stop as I glance down to see it’s Damon. “What’s going on?”

“The press arrived as we were pulling away. I don’t think they realized she was in the car, or we’d have been followed.” You can tell he’s running on adrenaline. “The Hillards called and told her to keep going, and they would handle everything.”

“Good. You need an escort?” I won’t hesitate to send every patrol car towards them.

“Nah, we’ll be fine. I think I should park in the garage so no one sees her, though.” Bright kid.

“I’ll move my truck, and the spot is yours.”

Hanging up, I get my vehicle out and park it on the street. After that, I make a call to have cameras placed outside the house as I wait in the garage for them. Damon’s black Civic comes around the corner a few minutes later. I don’t see a passenger and immediately start to freak out until he parks in the garage, and Ellie pops up from the back seat as I hit the button to close the roller door. It’s brutal waiting until we’re enclosed before opening the car door and pulling her out into my arms.

“You okay?” I cup her cheeks and tilt her head, searching those melted honey eyes that express so much to me. Her smile is exhilarating.

“It was kind of fun,” she whispers, and her nose crinkles as she hides the laughter bubbling up from her belly. “Damon played bodyguard well, demanding I get in the back and stay down. Even tossed a sweater over me so no one would see.”

Shooting a look at my son, he shrugs. “Better safe than sorry?” His boyish grin makes me shake my head.

“You’re sure you’re alright?” She nods again. “You two go inside and make something to eat. I’ll bring your bags to my room.”

Ellie pauses. “Your room?” Her cheeks flush, and her eyes sparkle.

“Beat it, Damon.” I wait until my son is gone before addressing her again. “You really believe I’m going to allow you to sleep anywhere but with me?” If she does, she’s lost her damn mind.

Wrapping her arms around my waist, she leans into me. “No, Daddy, but I didn’t want to assume, either.”

“Sweetheart, assume anything good with me at any time.”

I lean down, tilting her chin higher, and capture her lips with mine. Licking across the seam, I tease her until she whines for more before backing off.

“That was mean, Daddy,” she pouts. I fucking love how comfortable she is calling me that. Nothing makes me happier.

“Be a good girl today, and I’ll treat you right tonight,” I growl in her ear, licking the sensitive skin underneath and nibbling the lobe.

“Yes, Daddy.”

Tapping her ass, I send her inside to eat with Damon while I grab the three small bags she brought with her. I’ll have to see about getting the remainder of her belongings released from the house she shared with her father. I want her to feel at home here, and having familiar things will help with that.

Taking her bags up to my room, the sound of laughter follows up from the kitchen. I was worried about how the leak would affect Ellie, but it seems she’s taking it better than I imagined. That or she’s hiding behind her laughter and will have a breakdown later.

Shooting a quick text to Reed, I ask him to start digging into everyone with knowledge and access to the new information we’d only discovered a day prior. By Monday morning, I want the asshole in cuffs. I don’t care who it is; I won’t back down from the fight that’ll come from arresting a fellow officer.
