THIRTY-ONE

I push past Maddox and fling the door open.

I don’t even care if I run into anyone. I’m sure I look like a mess. But I can’t spend one more second in his presence.

Tightness fills my chest.

The least you owe me.

I hug my purse to my chest.

Never again.

Never again will I be fooled by this man.

All those years ago, in that cursed library, I thought of him as the big bad wolf.

In my mind, it was a joke.

But it’s true.

Only this isn’t a fairy tale.

And no one is coming to save me.
