The past seven weeks had been filled with so much that it made my head hurt when I thought about it.
The first was the elimination of the pipeline that Thurman James Thacker III created.
It was dismantled across all routes.
Somehow, the Dark Patriots had friends and allies who helped them do it.
Some ended up in prison where they belonged.
Others met the same end as Thacker and those with him.
Mace hadn’t given me all the details, but he did say they found an underground tunnel and cells.
I wished they could find and prosecute all those who bought people, but it wasn’t possible.
That was the saddest part.
While they weren’t giving up on finding those taken, it was a tedious process that would take years, and they still wouldn’t get close to half of them.
I had to learn to live with the knowledge that if it weren’t for me, more people would be victims of this bunch.
I knew there were others out there, but at least we got rid of one.
A couple of weeks after my enemies were gone, Mace and I traveled to Cottonwood to pack up my life there and move it to Cherokee.
I did stop by the school where I’d worked.
They were all surprised to see me.
We left the lie Mace told my landlord originally in place.
I wasn’t ready to have everyone know and ask a million questions.
It was sad that I hardly felt any regret leaving.
When we returned to Cherokee, the house was further changed to incorporate more of my things into it.
It felt like our home now.
An even greater positive thing was the birth of Knight and Natalya’s baby.
They’d refused to know what it was.
Tana had predicted to the others I found out that it was to be a boy.
When Natalya went into labor two weeks ago, we’d all gathered and impatiently waited to meet the newest member of the club and to find out if they had a boy or girl.
Cara was so cute.
She was torn about whether it was better to have a sister who she could play with and dress up.
Or to have a brother who wouldn’t want to steal her clothes and stuff.
After hours of waiting, we finally had our answer.
Iain was born.
He was a big guy.
Even as a newborn, you could see he looked like Knight.
When we eventually got to see him, the intensity of his blue eyes told me he’d inherited his daddy and sister’s eyes.
The whole family was thrilled.
Cara would rarely leave his side.
Seeing them holding a new baby made me want one, but I thought it would be best if Mace and I settled a bit more before we thought of doing that.
At the moment, life was great, and I didn’t think there was anything that could top it.
