EPILOGUE
Ash
W e spent the past month mostly alone, updating the condo to our taste as a couple. Exploring ourselves sexually and testing our boundaries. The thought of returning to work loomed, but the comfort of Eve’s presence beside me eased the anxiety. We closed all the deals, with only a few ongoing. The casino is under our management now.
To ensure her safety, I’d keep her away from certain things, particularly anything potentially dangerous. But no more secrets about what I do.
“I’ve bought something for you.” I move silently behind Eve, setting a heavy wooden box in front of her.
“I’m almost afraid to open this.” With a light, happy giggle, she accepts my gift.
The sudden thudding of knuckles against the door pulls us from our discussion. “I’ll get it.” My lips brush her ear as I whisper.
I open the door, and a courier, slightly breathless from climbing the stairs, stood there with a receipt. “Ash McKenzie?” He inquires.
“Yes.” I take the package, its weight surprisingly light for its size, and then quickly close the door. Eve’s expression is unreadable, and I wonder what she has planned for us. “What’s this?”
“I don’t know.” She glances down at the package in my hand. “Open it.”
I hesitate, a knot tightening in my stomach, before opening the box—it wasn’t from Eve. In my line of work, such caution is second nature. I shake the package and hear a clicking sound. I rip open the tape and open the box.
A red balloon pops from the box with a slight ‘whoosh,’ revealing a small, elegantly written card at the bottom.
