TWENTY-ONE
Dove
My doorbell rings, and I realize I fell asleep on the couch. I look around it for my cell phone and find it on a cushion. Scrolling through, I see I don’t have any missed calls. I’ll have to call Reid soon to check in.
My doorbell rings again.
I want to ignore it, but these days, I have no idea who it could be.
Getting off my couch, I carry my phone with me and head to the front door.
It rings again.
“Coming!”
I look through the peephole and recognize who it is. I’m exhausted, but this feels like a new personality trait of mine with all of the strange hours I’ve been keeping. Even more so than ever before.
I undo the main lock and then the chain.
“Hi, is everything okay?” I ask as I open it.
He lunges for me, and I know something is off. I start to run toward the back of my house, attempting to call Reid as I do.
A hard thud bangs against my head, and all I see is darkness falling upon me.
