JENNA
“Hey there,” a gorgeous butch with a buzzed head smiled at me as she slid into Sy’s spot.
I tilted my head as I looked over at her, my eyes flicking between her and my best friend on the stage. “Hi.”
Extending her hand, the woman met my blue eyes with her hazel. “I’m Dana, I haven’t seen you here before. You guys killed that duet.”
“Oh thank you, we’re here like once a month.” I kept my eye on Sy, unable to look away fully.
Dana nodded toward Sy who was in the middle of belting out Build Me Up Buttercup . “Are you guys together… or?”
My mouth fell open as I tried to find the words. I hadn’t expected this stranger to nail down my exact dilemma so quickly.
“Great question. She’s my roommate and my best friend.” I bit the inside of my cheek as I considered just how much more I should reveal.
But Dana seemed to have a grip on exactly what was going on. “And you slept together?”
Laughing, I nodded as I looked up at Sy. “Yep.” Her eyes had closed completely as she gripped the mice with both hands, her toned forearms hit perfectly by the overhead spotlight.
Raising an eyebrow, Dana was intrigued by the drama. “And you haven’t talked about it?”
I shook my head. “No, we have. But I’m moving out of state in a few weeks so we decided not to pursue it.”
“Really? Damn, that’s kind of a shame.”
“You think so?” My forehead wrinkled. It seemed messy, chaotic, and not at all like a good way to leave.
But Dana nodded, vehemently. “I mean, falling for your best friend is kind of a dream, no? Someone who loves you for you with no ulterior motives and accepts you as you are. Fuck I wish I had a friend like that.”
When she put it like that, it was hard to argue with. Of course, it was devoid of nuance; what if we were wrong and we couldn’t get over the romantic feelings to go back to friendship?
“Wanna make her jealous?” Dana scooted over, ready to lay on her own charm to help me out.
As much as I loved her eagerness to accept a challenge, I knew just how sensitive Sy was to jealousy. So instead I giggled and leaned into Dana’s ear. “If I know anything about Sy, this will be plenty to eat away at her. But thank you.”
Dana nodded and gestured toward her friends. “If you change your mind, me and my pals are hanging out over there and we’d all be happy to help. We love a challenge.”
Just one peek at the group leaned against the pool table told me everything I needed to know.
Sy’s song was coming to an end as our chat finished up. I could tell from her wrinkled brow that she was already on guard.
Maybe there would be more than one show tonight.
