Opposites Attract: An Heiress and Her Untamed Lawman
Prologue Shadows of Obsession
Nick Malone
New York City was supposed to be asleep. Midnight had already cast its spell over the city, draping the skyline in darkness and glitter. But Manhattan never truly slept. It thrived in the shadows, a beast that fed on power, corruption, and those arrogant enough to think they were untouchable.
Celeste Bellerose.
His woman. His reason. His only weakness.
He stood at the periphery of the lavish charity gala during the famous New York City’s Fashion Week, held in one of Manhattan’s most exclusive hotels.
His presence blending into the sea of suited guards, glittering chandeliers, and the perfume of wealth.
This wasn’t his world. But wherever Celeste was, he’d make damn sure it was safe.
Bellerose International’s logo gleamed on the silver-embossed invitations, an empire of elegance built on threads of ambition and determination. And somewhere within this charade of sophistication, a predator lurked.
Nick’s earpiece went live. “Graham here. Cameras show Wolfe circling the event. No signs of aggression yet, but the bastard’s too slick for my taste. Want me to send reinforcements?”
“Negative,” Nick growled, his voice low and cold. “I’ll handle him.”
“You sure? Wolfe’s not your everyday psycho. This guy’s escalated.”
Nick’s jaw tightened. He didn’t need Graham’s reminders. Wolfe was more than a deranged stalker. His obsession with Celeste had twisted into something monstrous.
“Just keep eyes on every damn entrance,” Nick ordered. “If he slips through, I’ll skin him myself.”
The communication line went dead, and Nick’s focus sharpened. His gaze slid over the crowd, hunting for the one person he needed to see most.
And then he saw her.
Celeste stood at the heart of the ballroom, a vision of perfection wrapped in silk the color of midnight. Her blonde hair cascaded over her shoulders like golden silk, her eyes a radiant blue that dared anyone to cross her. To them, she was a queen among peasants.
But Nick saw the tension etched into her delicate posture, the way her fingers clutched her champagne flute just a fraction too tight.
Because she felt it too. The danger. The wolf (pun intended) at the door.
Their eyes met across the room, and he gave her a subtle nod. A promise.I’ve got you.
At her feet, Sabre (pronounced Saber) lay coiled like a fortress of muscle and loyalty, his one gold fang a lethal flash against the soft lighting. The beast was as much a symbol of power as he was a guardian. And tonight, Nick welcomed the company.
His earpiece went live again. “Got him on the north entrance. Looks like he’s trying to blend with the crowd. Guess he doesn’t know you’re already on his ass.”
A feral smile cut across Nick’s lips. “Let him come. He’s mine.”
He moved like a shadow through the opulence, weaving between marble columns and champagne-fueled conversation. The music and laughter faded into the background, his senses honing in on the hunt.
Adrian Wolfe.
Nick had memorized every detail of the man’s file. Arrogant. Wealthy. Dangerous. The type who viewed women like Celeste as trophies to be taken, owned, and caged.
But Wolfe had miscalculated. Because Celeste wasn’t some helpless damsel waiting to be saved. And Nick sure as hell wasn’t some rent-a-cop to be taken lightly.
“West Wing Corridor,” Graham’s voice cut through his focus. “He’s making his way toward the VIP entrance.”
Nick’s body was in motion before the words even fully registered. His steps were soundless, his rage a living, breathing thing barely contained. He rounded a corner and there Wolfe was.
Polished. Perfectly tailored. And utterly unprepared.
Their eyes met, and Nick saw something break in Wolfe’s cold, calculating gaze. Recognition. And pure, undiluted terror.
“Going somewhere?” Nick’s voice was pure venom, his fingers already curling into the fabric of Wolfe’s expensive jacket.
The bastard sneered, but the arrogance was fractured. “You think this ends with me?”
“Yes.” Nick’s smile was a slow, lethal thing. “I do think it does end with you.”
Wolfe’s body slammed against the wall with a force that sent a groan rattling through his chest. His hands scrambled at Nick’s grip, but Nick only tightened his hold.
“She deserves better than you,” Wolfe spat, his tone trembling on the edge of madness. “You’re nothing but a brute playing house. She needs someone who understands her world. Who—”
“Shut up.” Nick’s voice dropped to a murderous whisper. “The only thing you need to understand is this—if you so much as breathe in her direction again, I’ll bury you so deep not even the earthworms will find your body.”
Wolfe laughed, a brittle, ugly sound. “You can’t protect her forever.”
“That’s where you’re wrong,” Nick said, his tone ice-cold and absolute. “Forever is what I have planned.”
Wolfe’s defiance wavered, the knowledge of his own doom reflected in his eyes.
“Security’s en route,” Graham reported through the earpiece. “You want us to haul him out of here?”
“Damn right,” Nick replied. “And make sure he understands what happens if he tries this again.”
“Copy that. Extraction team’s moving in.”
Nick released Wolfe with a shove that sent the man sprawling to the marble floor. His hands clenched into fists, his body still thrumming with theurge to destroy.
But his attention had already shifted. Wolfe was nothing more than an insect crushed under Nick’s boot.
The only thing that mattered was Celeste.
Nick returned to the ballroom, his eyes zeroing in on her with a focus that bordered on obsession. Because protecting her wasn’t just a job. It was his purpose.
The world could burn around them, and he’d stand between her and the flames every damn time.
And if anyone dared to threaten her again, he would rip the city apart, piece by bloody piece, until nothing remained but her safety and his promise fulfilled.
Graham Murphy grew up in the heart of Brooklyn, the youngest son of a retired NYPD detective and his mother a nurse.
Raised on stories of heroism, corruption, and everything in between, Graham knew early on that he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.
But where his old man believed in working the system from within, Graham developed a grittier approach—one rooted in the realities of modern-day crime-fighting.
He joined the NYPD right out of college, earning his stripes on the toughest beats in the city.
His reputation for being cool-headed under pressure, loyal to a fault, and capable of disarming even the most volatile situations earned him respect among his peers.
He rose through the ranks, eventually landing a spot in a special task force dealing with high-profile criminal organizations and counterterrorism efforts.
It was during one of these joint operations that he crossed paths with Nick Malone.
The operation had gone sideways, a planned raid turning into an all-out firefight in the bowels of a Manhattan warehouse.
Graham and Nick had each other’s backs that night, both refusing to leave the other behind when bullets were flying, and the odds were stacked against them.
Their mutual respect was forged in blood and adrenaline, and that bond never wavered.
Outside of the force, Graham’s known for his sharp wit and dry humor—away of coping with the darkness he sees on the streets.
He’s a natural protector, fiercely loyal to his friends and family.
And when Nick needs someone he can trust implicitly, there’s never a doubt Graham will be there, no matter the risk.
