Chapter forty-two
Ryn
Some fears don’t age, they endure and collapse my soul- Ryn Raines
I head down to the restaurant to grab a coffee for my walk, with a smile on my lips. I can’t believe I’m this happy, the feeling just eclipses everything, and I find myself almost bouncing. Lyrics roll through my head, and the urge to break out into song is terrible, completely horrifying, and so, so lovely.
What a difference a couple of days can make. This place has turned from a nice home away from home to a paradise I don’t want to leave.
As long as they are with me.
I left them sleeping in the enormous bed, but I’m too restless to sleep, so I thought I’d take a walk, go up to the cliffs, and look at the ocean.
We won’t be staying here. I know it, it’s lovely, but now that we’re a pack, we’ll be heading back to the city and I just want to exist here for a little bit longer.
Pretend that we don’t have to face everything yet.
The lifts slide open, and I step out, my thongs slapping the hotel lobby floor and making me smile.
I glance at the reception desk and see it empty. I pause, studying the empty chair. The hairs on my neck lift, and I’m suddenly struck by a feeling of wrongness.
“Where are the staff?” I whisper.
All my instincts tell me not to move, but I can’t stay here. There’s always someone at the desk. My heart rate picks up, and I shift my body slightly, turning to get a look at the restaurant. My stress increases when I realise that the normally bustling business is empty .
This is bad.
Several scenarios push into my mind, but I shove them out. I glance around again, searching for someone, anyone. But when I fail to find a single soul, I take a step back, unsure. I feel like a hunted animal. There is a sweet scent on the air that I don’t like, it’s sickly like toffee and icing.
Fuck it, I’m going back to the hotel room, except as soon as I think about it, it’s too late.
Five huge security guards swarm in faster than I can imagine. I whirl to run, but another one clotheslines me with a massive concrete arm. I scramble up, letting out a scream, but two of the giants in black suits slam me face first to the ground. They have superior skills, pinning me to the floor before I even realise what’s happened.
Uley Ethel walks out of the staff area, his shoes clicking on the marble. He pulls a phone out of his suit pocket as he coldly peruses me.
I bare my teeth and struggle against the hands holding me to the cold marble.
“Let me go!” I shout.
“Yes, Alpha, we have her. We’re on route to you now.”
“You asshole!” I scream at the ridiculous little man. “You can’t do this! They will kill you!” I spit out, promising his death.
He ignores me and points to the door.
I scream and fight them, but it makes no difference. They are too big and too strong, and there is no one to help me. I’m lifted onto my feet, and when I let my body go limp, they simply hold me up like I weigh nothing.
I’m dragged out of the hotel and towards the private guest houses behind the massive building. The path we take is one that is fairly well hidden and not well known. These guest houses cost small fortunes to rent, and that bad feeling I have gets worse and worse. Kelly rents one of these guest houses, so I know the layout fairly well, but the one they drag me into has a huge lounge room. All the other doors are closed, the furniture is low and expensive, and it’s very tastefully arranged.
I’d be impressed any other day.
However, as soon as the door peels open, my panic grows until there is almost nothing else. It’s not like I’d forgotten, but I’d been so busy with the pack that I hadn’t consciously remembered. In my hand, I carefully open my phone without looking and press a series of buttons I’ve memorised.
I think of the alphas and my omega in bed and feel a moment of deep, intense regret.
He walks quickly, his steps clapping out an angry refrain. The suit looks far too hot in this environment, but that doesn’t ever bother him. No, hell would look like a sauna to this alpha .
He reaches out, waving everyone away. The body guards let go of me, stepping back like well-trained dogs. Uley has his back pressed against the wall, watching with glowing, hungry eyes like the sick fuck he is.
My father, Typhor Raines, reaches out casually and grips my wrist so hard he grinds the bones together as he yanks me to him. The message to Kelly has gone through. Not a moment too soon because my phone goes flying and vanishes across the other side of the room.
My mother, who I had not noticed against the wall, let’s out a cry and lifts a hand towards me before stopping, remembering her place and stepping back, her hands clasped and her eyes averted. In the corner of the room, standing beside Uley, I spot Tara, but she’s not smiling. No, her face is white and strained, and she’s shaking.
My father’s eyes glow with a demonic light as glares down at me.
“Auryn, did you really think you could escape me?”
