Chapter Fourteen
D ays later, Batya was feeling more at home than she ever had. The restlessness she’d gotten used to had been calmed. There was just one more thing she needed to do.
Right after lunch, she approached Khyron.
“Sir?”
“Yes, Batya.”
“I’d like access to a secure line so I can call my mother.”
“Of course.”
He left her alone in the small room. When her mother’s face popped up on the screen, Batya smiled.
“Oh honey, it’s so good to see you! I was wondering when you’d call.”
“It took a little while to settle in but I wanted to let you know that I’m okay.”
“You took one of those private jobs you were telling me about?”
“Yes, but I can’t tell you anything about it.”
“I understand.”
Her mother paused, her eyes glistening a bit.
“You look happy, Batya.”
“I am.”
The silence hung between them for almost a minute. The air swelled with words that were still being left unsaid. Finally, Adelaide broke the quiet.
“I’m happy you’ve found your place, honey.”
Batya nodded.
“Thanks, Mom.”
It felt good to be who and where she was meant to be.
