Raine
One Year Later
“Are you nervous?” I ask as Delilah sucks in a breath.
“Of course not. It’s only a ball,” she says as she raises her eyebrow at me.
“A ball in which your king will announce you as his Luna. No one would blame you if you were nervous, you know.”
Delilah rolls her eyes, her hand on her hip. The courtyard lights make the iridescent sequins in her gown glitter.
Though the bunched skirts do a fair job of hiding her fuller figure, my eyes are not so easily fooled.
“Are you feeling nauseous at all?” I ask, glancing back and forth, waiting for someone to pop their head in and request Delilah’s presence.
“Not at this moment,” she huffs.
She paces back and forth, and I can’t help but grin.
“How far along are you?” I ask, my own emotions getting the best of me. It feels like forever since I gave birth to my daughter, Meadow.
I never thought I’d miss being pregnant—it certainly hadn’t been easy. But whenever I see Nyx with Meadow in his arms, the desire for another child hits me like a storm. Every night after tucking my daughter in, I find myself wrapped up in Nyx until the sun rises, hoping I can soon give Meadow a partner in crime.
Given our history, I know I should be angry. After all, this would not be the first time Aiden Summers has done things in the wrong order.
But seeing him with Meadow, with Delilah…I know he has changed.
With Anais removed from the equation due to “irreconcilable differences,” Aiden took his alpha-king title as a bachelor.
He admitted on his throne to having an unsanctioned child and, in the same breath, announced a ball to announce his Luna.
Delilah had told me in her letters that he’d planned to do so. Only when I came to Pollis did I realize the truth she hadn’t divulged in her letters. A mother knows the signs.
She sighs, opening her mouth.
“Do not tell me it is complicated.” I tease, and tension bleeds into laughter.
She shakes her head.
“I’m not sure, actually. The last few weeks have been a bit of a blur.” She says as she rubs her neck. Beneath her makeup, I can still see the faint pink markings.
Once upon a time, I would have been jealous of such things, especially since I know who is responsible for that claiming bite.
But all I can think as I watch her cheeks blush, as she smiles demurely, her hand resting on her stomach, is that I am so happy. A knock on the door comes, disrupting our momentary respite.
“It is time,” the beta says, and I nod.
Delilah grabs my hands, squeezing them tightly.
“You’re going to be fine,” I say with as much reassurance as I can before letting her go.
My heart skips a beat when I find my place next to Nyx on the large field. He stands there with his hands in his pockets, all dark and brooding against the setting sun, and I can’t help but be overwhelmed by the sight of him. Heat blooms in my chest, in my heart, and between my thighs.
I will never get enough of this man. My mate.
“I was starting to think someone was getting cold feet,” he says nonchalantly as he opens his arm slightly, giving me space to move in.
I curl to his side like I belong there because, as far as I’m concerned, I do.
“Not quite,” I say with a smirk, leaning up to kiss him.
He settles into my kiss, his tongue finding mine quickly, and I have to remember we are in public.
Before I can chastise him for making my thighs wet and my insides heat like a flame, the fanfare of announcement echoes in the air.
As I watch Delilah walk arm in arm down the royal carpet with the Alpha King of the North, I can’t help but feel like this, too, is fate.
Nyx holds me close and kisses my hair as I watch Aiden announce my best friend as his Luna.
And when his gaze meets mine, I can’t help but smile, because fate works in mysterious ways.
