Chapter 1

BECCA

PRESENT

Flying home for Lenna’s birthday was of the utmost importance. Since the night of the accident, I had tried to regrow myself and how I viewed life. Some days I was successful and others I was an utter failure.

But right now, I was successful.

I was going to bring joy to my best friend’s life and make her celebrate her thirtieth birthday. I also had the sneaking suspicion that since she and Conrad were working together, they would indeed hit it off again and I loved that for her .

Walking into her apartment, I was delighted to see the exact person that I thought would be beside her: Conrad Stone, the defensive end for the Crescent City Kings. New Orleans was lucky to have him. Their poor quarterback had been knocked on his ass quite a few times, so they needed the help.

After greeting them, I caught sight of Jordy, Thomas and Lenna’s youngest brother, who also played for the Kings Organization. He was avoiding me at all costs and only the two of us knew why. That was something I never even shared with Lenna, but maybe one day I would.

The chaos in the moment was fun to witness. The longing that Conrad and Lenna still had for one another was written all over their faces, but both were stubborn enough to push their feelings to the side because they don’t want to face the reality that they were meant to be. Even through a tragedy… they lived.

“C’mon Becks. Gotta get to work,” Lenna said, pulling me out of my inner thoughts.

“You sure I won’t get in trouble?” I asked, hoping that she would say she didn’t know and I could stay at the apartment. I wasn’t keen on going to work with her, even though she was the social media manager for the Kings. I didn’t necessarily want to be around hot-headed pro football players, and I definitely didn’t want any of them to talk to me. I enjoyed my private bubble of singleness.
