Revolt (The Onyx Mist #2)
Prologue
Cillian
Death was a vision, poised above him, her curls falling over her shoulders like a dark halo.
Cillian longed to wrap them in his fists and pull Mora off him.
To straddle her and force her into submission.
His fingers twitched, muscles aching as agony flooded his veins—he could hardly move.
Each labored breath fled his lungs in a rattling shudder, the sluggish beat of his heart awakening a new wave of unrelenting misery.
Darkness beckoned. He fought against it, his azure eyes locking onto her. The one thing he would hold onto, no matter what came next.
What a gorgeous creature Mora was, bathed in carnage. His creature. His Treasure. Sanguine soaked her hair and slid down her cheeks, drops of bloody rain hitting his face like pinpricks.
He almost liked it; marking her, soaking her in him and staining every inch of her skin so thoroughly she could never rid herself of his touch.
Mora could claw Cillian’s heart from his body, but she could never tear him from her soul. He’d molded himself too carefully into her being. Intricately bound himself to her blood. The Fates defied him, but he was clever enough to weave his own destiny.
Frantic fingers and wisps of obsidian sank deeper into his chest, a war cry spilling from his woman’s lungs.
His lips parted. All he could manage was a pained gasp, too many words dying on his tongue.
Bones cracked. Crimson pooled around them, soaking their black silk sheets, a river of lifeblood abandoning his body and leaving him to drown in endless cold.
This was his end.
But it wasn’t her escape.
There was no future where he didn’t own her mind. No reality where he didn’t cling to her body.
As the world began to fade, he glanced up at her one final time, admiring the soft halo of gold permeating her being.
His glorious Treasure. His lids were too heavy, each breath more difficult than the last. But he hoped she saw the final look in his eyes.
His promise that, even if death loomed between them, Mora would never be rid of him.
Not truly.
