Chapter Seven
Connor
Iris screams and thrashes, her teeth clenched as she strains. A wail splits the room and I grin, my heart swelling with love and pride.
“It’s a girl!”
I didn’t think I could ever be happier than I was when I first met my girl but I was wrong. My daughter screams, her red face scowling as she lets us all know that she’s not happy.
Iris’s green eyes swell with tears and she runs a finger down our daughter’s cheek, laughing when she quiets and her mouth follows her finger.
“Have you got a name for her?” The nurse smiles as she takes her to clean her up.
I look at my wife and nod my head and she gives me a misty, gentle smile. “Therese Aurora.”
We both love the dawn over the mountains and we talked it over and agreed if it was a girl to name her after her sister.
What happened to her was horrible and I know Iris will never get over it. But that pain brought us together. Pain and life. Pain and hope.
All things come full circle and as I watch Iris hold our little girl and she nuzzles up to her, suckling, I know that this is the start of our bright new future. Our family.
Our hope. Our love brought us to this point and our love will make our family’s hopes and dreams a reality.
“I love you, baby girl.”
Her green eyes shimmer with so much joy it lights up her whole beautiful face. “I love you too, Mr. Grumpy Mountain Man.”
I throw my head back and laugh, our daughter jumping then nuzzling closer, suckling.
Laughter and love and new hopes and dreams. It’s all I ever wanted and it’s all because of this one woman.
My lovely Iris.
