Abigail
One year later…
“Cheers.” Tally hands me a champagne flute, and I take a sip, scanning the scene before us.
It’s obscene. The huge black gazebo in Christian Beckworth’s garden. The waiters all dressed immaculately in black and white. The flowers and balloons. The huge buffet table laid out complete with the biggest chocolate fountain I’ve ever seen.
No expense has been spared for the small, intimate celebration. Raine and I got our A Level results last week. We both passed with flying colours. Tally, Oakley, Theo, and Reese all survived their first year of university. And Elliot completed his internship, earning himself a promotion to junior paralegal.
We start at university next month and since it’s only a forty-minute journey, he’s going to work part-time at the firm with Christian while doing his law degree.
I’m so proud of him, of the man he’s becoming.
For a while, I worried that his father would make things difficult for us. But he didn’t. He let Elliot go—disowned his own son—and never looked back.
We didn’t either though.
We had a wonderful year of building a life together. Finding ourselves after years of pain and heartache. That’s not to say there hasn’t been ups and downs, there has.
For both of us.
But we give each other time and space and grace to make mistakes.
“Cheers,” I say, meeting my best friend’s smile. “This is… too much.”
“Did you really expect anything less? You know how the boys can be.”
Do I ever.
I glance over at the four of them, dressed to perfection in their suits. It’s only been a year but they seem so much older. Mature in a way that comes from them being thrust into a world of money and power and influence from such a young age.
Christian approaches them, squeezing Elliot’s shoulder as they shake hands. Tally’s father joins them, clapping Theo on the back, and the six of them laugh at something Oakley says.
“You okay over there?” I ask Tally as she stares at them, an unreadable emotion on her face.
“It still feels too good to be true sometimes,” she muses.
“Your father knows how much Oakley loves you.”
“I know. I just never imagined… We’re lucky, Abs.” She grabs my hand and squeezes it. “I know things didn’t end well with Elliot’s family but?—”
“It’s fine. Johnathon and Scott aren’t good people. We all know that.” We’ve heard enough stories from the boys after their first year at SCU to confirm what a twisted, sick man Scott really is. “Do I wish that his family could support him, support us, yes. But they don’t and so I’ll love and support him enough to make up for it.”
Her smile widens. “You’re so different to the girl I met two years ago. I’m so proud of you, Abs. Of everything you’ve overcome.” She hugs me tight, whispering, “He’s watching you, you know.”
Of course I know.
Elliot’s intense gaze is like a permanent brand on my skin. Whenever we’re in the same room but not together, I feel him watching. Feel the weight of his stare follow me.
But it doesn’t make me shrink. It doesn’t make me want to run and hide. It makes me stand tall. It lights me up inside and makes me burn.
Knowing that Elliot is always there, ready to fight my battles or stand at my side as I fight my own is more than I ever hoped for.
His love and understanding and encouragement has forged me into a strong, confident young woman who knows what she wants and what she’s capable of.
“Enjoy the party, Abs,” Tally says, giving me a knowing smirk as she walks off.
“There’s my girl.” Elliot slides his arm around my waist, pulling me in close. My hand goes to his chest as I gaze up at him. So giddy and full of love.
“Isn’t this all a bit… much?” I arch a brow and Elliot lets out a small huff.
“You’re one of the wealthiest girls in the county and yet a little luxury still offends you.”
“It doesn’t offend me, Elliot. I just don’t need all this.”
“Good thing it’s not just for you then.” He smirks, leaning down to brush a kiss against my lips. “I love you.”
“I love you too. Can you believe we start uni next month?”
“Not going to lie, Red, never imagined I’d get to have this with you.”
“Any regrets?”
His eyes darken, his fingers tightening on my waist. “The only thing I regret is the time we wasted. That I didn’t make you mine sooner.”
“Elliot…” I breathe, overcome with emotion.
“I need you, Red. Can we sneak away and?—”
“Photo time,” Fiona announces, and the rest of our friends crowd us as we stand and pose for Fiona and Christian and a few other adults invited today. Tally’s parents, Maureen, and Theo’s stepmum and sister Millie.
“Still can’t believe you’re not coming to SCU,” Oakley grumbles.
“Seriously?” Reese says. “Elliot and Scott would destroy each other.”
“Still fucking weird that he acts like you don’t even exist,” Theo adds, earning him an elbow in the ribs from Raine. “Ow, fuck, babe. What was that for?”
She shoots him an incredulous look and we all chuckle. Even Elliot. Because despite how things ended up with his family, he’s happy.
He’s finally free.
And family…
Well, family isn’t always those you share DNA with.
Sometimes, it’s the people you choose.
The people you love unconditionally.
And this group of Heirs and their girlfriends… are the only family we’ll ever need.
Elliot
All afternoon I’ve watched my girl laughing and joking with her friends. She looks as beautiful as ever in her summer dress, her hair for once pulled back from her face, letting us see her.
My heart is fuller than I ever thought it could be. But something is missing.
Everything we’ve achieved this year has been incredible. More than I ever thought it would be. And I know that we’ve only got more of it to come.
I can’t wait.
I want to experience everything with Abigail.
“You look like a love sick puppy,” Oak says, stepping up beside me as I watch my girl laughing with his.
“I am,” I confess without taking my eyes off her.
I get it, man. I fucking get it.”
“Do you think about it…” His brows pinch as I trail off. “About the future?”
“Fuck, yeah. All the time. Graduating, our first jobs, our home,” he says, getting this far off look in his eye.
“Y-yeah,” I agree, but… Abigail and I have already kinda done that. Albeit a little backwards. Recently, I’ve been thinking about more than just that.
“Oh shit,” Oak gasps, reading something in my eyes.
“What?”
“Are you gonna?—”
“Excuse me,” I say, interrupting his question and stalking towards my girl. “Sorry, Tally. I need to steal Abigail away for a few minutes.”
Abigail stares at me, a frown forming between her brows as I take her hand and tow her away.
“What’s wrong?” she asks as we hurry around the back of the gazebo.
With my sights set on the summer house right at the bottom of the garden, I pick up my pace, forgetting that she’s in heels.
“Jesus, Elliot. You need to slow— Fuck,” she cries when I spin around and sweep her into my arms. “What the hell is going on?” she asks, staring up at me with a mixture of curiosity and panic in her eyes.
“I need a minute with you?”
“Why? What’s happened?”
“Nothing,” I say, hoping to reassure her.
The second we get to the summer house, I kick the door open and step inside.
“You’re scaring me,” she whispers as I set her back on her feet. “Why are you hiding down here?”
I stand before her, my eyes studying hers before I let my gaze drop down her body.
“I…” I start, although with the rate my heart is pounding, I struggle to conjure up any other words.
“You what, Elliot?” she asks, her eyes bouncing frantically between mine as she tries to read my mind.
“I was just talking to Oak, and I realised something.”
“Okay,” she muses, the frown on her forehead deepening.
“I love you,” I blurt.
“I know. I love you too,” she says, reaching out and gently cupping my jaw.
Her touch calms me, but not enough to stop my heart from racing and my hands from trembling.
“Elliot?” she questions again when I just stand and stare at her. “Seriously, you’re freaking me— Oh my God,” she gasps her hand lifting to cover her mouth as I suddenly sink to the floor, resting on one knee.
“I love you, Abigail. I love you so fucking much. You have given me the best year of my life. I want more. So much more. So…” She stares down at me with tears filling her eyes as I take her trembling hand in mine. “Will you marry me?”
“Oh my God,” she gasps again.
“I didn’t plan this. I don’t have a ring, or some romantic speech. I just stood out there and realised that?—”
“Yes.”
“What?” I blink up at her, not believing what I just heard.
“Yes, Elliot. Yes, I’ll marry you. A million times yes.”
Her tears break free, spilling down her cheeks before she drops to her knees before me, wraps her arms around my shoulder and crashes her lips to mine.
Time ceases to exist as I lose myself in my girl, and when we part, we’re both laughing deliriously.
“I can’t believe you just did that,” she giggles. There’s so much happiness in the sound, on her face it makes it hard for me to breathe.
“Tell me about it,” I mutter, shaking my head. “I think I might have lost control a little bit there.”
“Aw,” she soothes, gripping the back of my neck and pulling me closer. “I love it when you lose control, all kinds of magical things happen.”
The twinkle in her eyes is nothing but pure mischief.
“Careful what you ask for, Red,” I warn as I flip her onto her back in the middle of the summer house. “You know that I’ll always deliver.”
