31. Gianna

Chapter thirty-one

Gianna

I’m hugging myself tightly as I watch the door, patiently waiting for anyone to unlock it. It has been almost twenty-four hours since Mateo locked me in.

As for the incident... He had only sent the in-house doctor to treat my wounds a couple of hours ago.

My head’s still hurting from crying and the hits. I’m now his prisoner and I have no fucking idea how to set myself free and save my daughter.

God, I hope he didn't do anything to hurt her.

The door finally opens as a tear rolls down my cheek. I stagger to my feet, pulling myself up slowly, clinging to the wall for support.

“Where… hmmmm… where i-is that bitch?” Mateo says. His speech is slurred as he staggers into the room.

Oh God.

He fumbles on his feet while trying to keep his balance.

Oh God, he is fucking drunk.

“There… there you are.” He points a finger at me and smiles. “You’ll soon be my wife,” he belches.

“Mateo,” I whisper.

“I fucking love you, Gianna.” His blue eyes stare at me with a deceitful innocence to them.

I have no idea what is going on but I decide to play along. “I love you, Mateo.”

He walks slowly to me. His breath stinking with the stench of alcohol. “Do you?”

“Yes, I do,” I lie. He tries to touch me but I move backward a little.

“I’ve only wanted you to love me, Gianna.”

“I have always loved you, Mateo.”

He coughs out a laugh and slaps his face with his palm. “Don’t lie to me, Princess.”

“I’m not.”

He tries to touch me again but I move my arm away before he does. “So let me touch your soft skin, Gianna.”

I’m breathing heavily as I stay glued to the wall. “O-okay,” I whisper.

Mateo reaches for my arm again and I let him touch me this time.

“I never meant to hurt you, Princess.”

This could just be my chance to get the fuck out of here. Although my body’s still hurting from last night, I’ll drag myself if I have to.

“I know you didn’t and I forgive you.”

He stares at my face. “You’re so fucking beautiful.” His finger trailing my arm up to my neck.

“I’m all yours, Mateo.”

“Yes, yes, you are.” He leans closer and places a kiss on my cheek.

I’ll let him touch me if it’s what it takes to gain my freedom right now.

“Mateo.”

His eyes are shut as he trails kisses down my throat. I’m heavily irritated by the stench from his mouth.

“Yes, love?”

“Can I ask you for something?”

“You can ask me for anything and it’s yours, Princess.”

I let out a breath. “Can... can I go out for some fresh air, just for a few minutes? It’s so hot and lonely in here.”

Mateo stops kissing my neck and stands upright to gaze at me. “You want to run away again, don’t you?”

“No, no… never. I’ll never leave you, Mateo.”

“Don’t you fucking lie to me, Princess!”

I gasp as he grabs my throat and pins me to the wall.

“I don’t want to hurt you anymore, Gianna.”

“Then don’t.”

“I should have killed your stupid brother and mother just like I did with your father,” he blurts.

What?

My eyes bulge out in shock. It was Mateo all along.

Oh my God.

“My plans were going so fucking well until that asshole came back.”

“Mateo, you’re hurting me.”

“This city belongs to me, Gianna. So do you.”

I grab his fingers on me and try to pull them off.

Mateo keeps his grip on my throat firm. He is still fucking strong even though he is drunk.

“Please, Mateo.”

“Everything worked out so well, killing the De Santis and framing your family for the murders to start a war. I’m a fucking genius, Princess. Don’t you agree?”

“Yes.” I nod in response. I have to get out of here.

Luca and everyone must know the truth. I can’t believe I almost doubted my family about the deaths of Luca’s parents. They’ve been telling the truth all this time.

My God.

We’ve been fighting the wrong people.

Luca…

Mateo ruined everything for me. Us. Made the man I loved turn into someone I could no longer recognize, driven by his quest for revenge. Everyone has to know. I can’t let him kill me now.

“Then that fucking bastard came around and took you away from me. He took my princess away.”

“Mateo, please let go of me.”

His grip on my throat loosens as he gags in my face.

I scrunch my face in disgust. The heavy stench of alcohol oozing from his mouth. It almost makes me puke in his face.

“I kept stealing his shipments to force him to give you up in exchange for a deal to help him with his shipment problem.” He coughs out a laugh. “That was so fucking easy since he always thought your family was behind everything. No one ever suspected a thing about me. None of you did,” he laughs.

“You’re hurting me, Mateo.”

His gaze becomes firm, with a menacing look replacing his calm demeanor of a second ago. “You hurt me first, Gianna.”

A tear falls down my cheek as he tightens his grip on my neck. My head is getting heavy as I struggle to breathe. His fingernails are digging into my skin.

“You went back to him and let him fuck you. I knew it when I saw the photos. I had my men keep their eyes on you. How do you expect me to fucking feel?”

“I… I’m so-rry.”

“You will be.” He lets go of my throat and steps away from me. “You’re going to be my wife. Mine forever.”

I fall to my knees, holding my throat as I cough.

“I’ll never let you go, Gianna. You’ll always belong to me and me alone.”

I’m breathing heavily as I tilt my eyes higher to stare at him. He stops to gaze back at me for a moment before he begins to walk back to the door.

No.

“Mateo?”

He stops as he grips the handle of the door. “Yes, Princess?”

“Sophie, I need to see my daughter.” I squeeze my eyes shut as I try to steady my breaths. “Please,” I add.

I’m at his mercy and I’ll do anything as long as he lets me see my baby.

“I’m not letting you leave this room just for you to pull off another fucking stunt.”

I plant my gaze on the floor as I beg him. “Please, Mateo. I just want to see my baby. I’m not going to try to leave anymore. I swear. Just let me have Sophie here with me.”

He lets out a sigh. “Fine. Just know that I’ll have you taken to the basement if you try anything funny again.”

“Thank you,” I whisper, as he shuts the door. He locks the door with a clicking sound following next.

God, not again.

I hate what I’ve become. What Mateo has turned me into. His helpless prisoner and soon-to-be wife.

My head hurts as I crawl to the side of the bed. I rest my back on the wooden frame, facing the door, patiently waiting for the moment he has Sophie brought to me. I’m hoping he does and isn’t lying to me.

Mother has no fucking idea the monster she entered into business with.

If only she was here to hear everything—the truth, and see how he fucking treats me—maybe this could have all been different. Maybe she wouldn’t have proposed a damn marriage from the onset.

I can’t stay here. Especially for my child. Sophie doesn’t deserve to stay in this hell.

“Giovanni, please, where the fuck are you?” I whisper to myself.

My gaze is fixed on the door as I hear the locks open. Mateo is standing behind a maid that has Sophie in her hands.

“So-Sophie,” I whimper, as I pull myself off the floor to take her in my arms.

“Mama… up me!” she screams excitedly as she sees me, stretching her hands to me.

“Oh, my baby.”

I stifle a sob as I take her in my arms, hugging her tightly.

God, I’ve missed her so much. Her hair smells like lavender. She is clad in a white top and shorts. Mateo must have made them get new outfits for her.

“Sophie,” I say, pulling her away from my neck to stare at her. Her big, golden brown eyes melt my heart as she stares at me. I place a kiss on both her cheeks and she giggles as softly as I do.

“I told you I wasn’t going to hurt her.”

Sophie begins to touch my face and my hair.

“I couldn’t possibly hurt my stepdaughter, even though that son of a bitch is her father.”

How? How did he fucking know?

Sophie rubs her cheeks on mine as she begins to play with me.

“Well, that’s enough. You’ll have more time with her when you don’t try to kill me anymore.”

No… no… no.

“Mateo, please. Not yet.”

He ignores my words and signals the maid to take Sophie back. Sophie is scared as she wraps her arms around my neck, a yell away from crying out loud.

“Mateo, please.”

“Get her back to her room, Aubrey.” He begins to walk closer to me.

The maid grabs Sophie from behind and tries to pull her away from me. I’m holding my baby tighter to stop her.

“This will be the last time you’ll ever see her if you don’t let go now,” Mateo whispers in my ear.

My eyes squeeze shut as his threat registers in my head and I let go of her. I fucking let go.

Sophie is crying out loud as she fights the maid to try to return to my arms.

“Good. Now get some sleep. We have a wedding tomorrow.”

My heart sinks deeper than I ever thought it could.

Tomorrow?

It’s over now.
