EPILOGUE
RIVER
I stare at Freya’s phone, my jaw locked. She left a note for me on it, and I must have read the message over a dozen times already, each word cutting to my bones. A deep, vicious blackness curls over me like smoke as I scroll to the top and start reading again.
River,
I know I said I was done running. I know I’m breaking my promise, but I need you to know I have no more secrets, no more lies. I would stay with you, Eli, Oz, and Jude forever if I could but this was the only way to bring Layla home.
My family has hurt yours enough, letting you go to keep Layla safe is the least I can do.
Tell the others I’m sorry.
All my love,
Freya x
I grip the phone tighter, wishing it was paper I could crumple in my hand. It was too easy, Zach just letting Freya and Layla go. I should have known something was wrong. I shouldn’t have let her leave my side. Freya takes self-sacrificing to a new level, she would have agreed to anything to keep Layla safe, even if it meant breaking a promise.
I turn the screen off, tuck the phone into my pocket, and force myself to take a breath.
Freya can run as much as she likes because I made a promise too, to chase her to the ends of the earth, and there’s not a chance in hell I’m breaking mine.
