Walking out of the bank, Serena Michaels could not help but do a happy dance across the parking lot to her car. She had just made the final payments on both her car and her student loans. She also opened a second savings account to hold the money that remained after paying off those loans. While she wouldn’t be getting rich quickly, at least she could start saving for future fun times.

It had taken two years of scrimping and living frugally, but she was debt free. Now she could begin putting money away for the special vacation her housemates kept talking about. They wanted to visit some sex resort in Montana. She only had to convince them to wait another six or eight months while she saved for the trip, though she would not mind taking a break now.

After growing up watching her parents as they fussed and fought and worried about how to pay off their many debts, Serena had vowed to herself to be as debt free as possible. Today that vow was fulfilled. Sitting in her car, she stared at the restaurant across the parking lot. It took a moment before she decided to take herself to a celebratory lunch. It was her last day of this cycle and she deserved a special treat. Then she would go home and prepare for her next round of twenty-four on, twenty-four off shifts as a paramedic.
