My cell door opens, and I slowly stand up. The guard comes into view, motioning for me to come out.
I can hear the inmates screaming and cussing.
I will never get used to the cries or screams of this place.
“You have a visitor.” The guard says calmly. She is the only thing I have to look forward to, the only thing that is keeping me sane in this fucking place.
My heart races as the guard grabs my arm and leads me down the walkway. We both stop as the guard nods, and the first door opens. We both walk through, and I hear the door close behind me, once again reminding me where I am, once again reminding me that I am just another inmate, another number in this pool of many numbers and many inmates.
I have been in here six months, and I plead guilty which means no trial, I did what I did and I am not going to lie and say I didn’t.
But Chad, that little bitch tried to fight it, which meant that not only did I get called to testify, but so did my sweet Lil.
She kept her eyes on me the entire time as she told her story, telling every detail of what Chad had done to her since the moment they met.
The jury and judge saw right through Chad’s bullshit excuse, and they found him guilty, he gets life in prison, parole in 15 if he is lucky, that is if he makes it to 15.
I am not so sure he will, and it will not be my doing, but in this place, they have their rules, and men who hurt women and children are seen to be the lowest of the low, which means Mr. Chady Boy has a target on his back.
So far, he has been in Gen Pop, which means I have been able to keep my eyes on him, and so have my new friends.
Chad knows I am watching him, and he acts as if he isn”t scared, but we can all see through his bullshit he is fucking terrified.
Good.
The guard stops at the door and nods at the camera, the door unlocks and he opens it.
He stays where he is as I walk into the small boxed room. The walls are empty and cold, just like every other part of this prison.
I look through the glass and see Lil sitting on the other side, holding the phone up to her ear.
She has bags underneath her eyes, and it looks like she hasn’t slept in days, both of us having nightmares.
I make my way to the chair and take a seat. Leaning forward, I take the phone and put it up to my ear.
“Hey, Darlin,” I say, looking her over.
She is wearing her hair up in a messy bun, and a long-sleeved black fitted shirt covers her wrists. My heart races a little at the thought of what she is going through with me being in here.
“Jax,” She whispers in a sad voice.
Her eyes search mine. I don”t know what she is looking for, but I can tell she isn”t finding it by the look in her eyes.
“Are you okay?’ I ask, even though I already know the answer, she is not okay, and she will not be okay until I can get the fuck out of here, which is why I have been staying in my fucking lane, making sure to be on my best behavior.
“Yeah, I am okay. I should be asking you that question,” She says quietly.
My beautiful Lil, all of this has taken its toll on her.
“I’m okay, Lil. I”m behaving so they don”t find any reason to keep me in here any longer,” I confess to her.
“I miss you,” she says, her voice cracking a little.
‘I miss you too, tell me what has been going on out there, “ I say, needing to help her to be distracted with anything other than what she is thinking about right now.
I want to touch her so fucking badly, but this damn glass is in the way. I just want to fucking hold her and tell her I am right fucking here and that I will never leave her, but I can’t hold her, I can’t touch her, I can’t kiss away her tears.
“They found someone to replace you, and they asked me to be their TA,” She says sadly.
I knew they would find someone to replace me, they can’t wait for me to get out of this place. It is good they have found someone, I don”t think I would stay working there after what happened with Chad. There are too many memories at that school, both good and bad.
“Yeah, and are you?” I ask, looking over her.
“I don”t know; I haven’t given them an answer yet; it just doesn’t seem right,” she says, looking away from me for a moment. I hate how distant she is.
“What do you mean?” I ask. She turns back, looks at me, and takes a deep breath.
“I feel like I am betraying you,” She confesses to me.
“Lil that is not true, you should do it,” I tell her, trying to encourage her to get out and live. I might be in prison, but that doesn’t mean she has to be in here with me.
“Really?” She asks in a surprised tone.
“Yes, really. What else?” I ask, needing to hear more, needing to hear her voice.
“I started to write a book,” She whispers.
“Tell me more, Darlin,” I say in a hopeful voice.
“Remember my paper?”
“Yes, I do, very much so.”
“I decided to turn it into a novel.”
“How’s the ending coming?” I ask, knowing she is a sucker for HEA.
She takes in a deep breath and rests her hand against the glass, I do the same. I watch her eyes fill with tears, making my heart stop.
“It ends with you in here,” She confesses, the sadness once again taking over her voice.
“Lil, that is not a HEA,”
“I can’t bring myself to write a different ending, not yet,” She says in a shaky uncertain voice, making my fucking heartache.
“I won’t be in here forever; I need you to be strong; can you do that.”
“I can try, for you,” she says with a little hope in her voice. That is all I needed to hear: that she would try.
“That’s my good girl,” I whisper.
“Do you want me to come back?’ She asks me.
I will always want her to come back. I need to see her, look into her beautiful eyes, and know that she is alive and okay.
“Of course I do. I look forward to seeing your face. I need to see your face, Lil. You are the only hope I have in here.” I confess to her. It is the truth. She is the first person I think of when I go to bed and the last person I think about when I wake up. She is my everything, and she will always be my everything.
“Have you seen him?” She asks, looking into my eyes.
I nod “He will never touch you again.”
“Promise me you won’t do anything stupid, Jax,” She begs me. I can never say no to her.
“I promise I will be coming home for you, Darlin, I promise,” I whisper to her through the glass.
She nods and allows the tears to escape her eyes and roll down her face, she leans forward and rests her forehead against the glass, I lean in kissing her, or at least in my mind, I am.
I’m coming home Darlin, please hang on for me.
