Chapter 49

CHAPTER 49

O live stepped outside with her bags the next morning. Trick and Tevin were already in the van waiting for her.

Their assignment was over, and it was time for them to go.

She usually didn’t feel hesitant when this moment came. No, she usually felt satisfied that she’d done her job.

But right now, a certain sadness lingered inside her—a sadness she couldn’t explain.

She turned to Reid, who was waiting for her there. “I’m glad everything worked out.”

“Not as glad as I am.” He stared at her, admiration in his gaze. “You and your team do excellent work.”

“Thank you. I’ll pass along that message.”

He shifted, his smile slipping as a more serious look filled his gaze. “Where are you off to now?”

“Truthfully? I’m not sure yet. Rex will probably tell us while we’re in transit.”

He nodded slowly. “If you ever decide life in Wyoming is for you, let me know.”

“Thanks, I will.” She cast him a soft smile.

Part of her thought the idea was nice. Maybe this was the kind of life she’d secretly always dreamed about.

But could she ever really see herself settling down?

She wasn’t sure yet.

Besides, she had unfinished business.

She remembered that text she’d gotten.

I know who murdered your family, and you don’t. This has got to be killing you.

She hadn’t wanted to follow up with it, not while she was on assignment. But as soon as she found a few days to herself, she was going to dive in.

Someone was taunting her, and she didn’t like being taunted.

“Well, goodbye.” Reid reached for her and pulled her into a hug.

Part of her wished she could melt into the embrace. But she couldn’t—for more than one reason.

As Reid pulled away, he planted a soft kiss on her cheek. “You’re an amazing woman, Olive.”

Her cheeks warmed—not with embarrassment but delight.

“You’re a pretty amazing man yourself, Reid.” As Olive said the words, she glanced behind her.

Hannah had appeared in the doorway.

Hannah, who was clearly madly in love with Reid. Olive had a feeling Reid was still clueless . . . but that didn’t mean Olive couldn’t put in a good word for the woman.

“If you ever decide you want to date again, remember that you don’t have to look very far.”

He tilted his head. “What do you mean?”

“One day, you’ll know.” She glanced at Hannah and smiled.

Then, with one more wave, Olive turned and walked to the van.

It was now on to her next assignment. New place. New people. New puzzles to solve and criminals to expose.

In fact, just this morning Jason had called and asked Olive to take on a case that could hit a little too close to home. She needed to talk to Rex about the potential assignment, but she hoped it would work out.

The details fascinated her. And it would give her an excuse to talk to Jason more.

Olive couldn’t wait—and that was no smokescreen.
