Three Days Later

I stepped into the hospital room carrying three cups of coffee. I handed one to Colt, another to Sarah, and settled in one of the chairs with mine.

“Thank fucking god,” Colt said, immediately draining half of the styrofoam cup. “This tastes like ass. But it’s caffeine.”

Sarah laughed as she sipped hers, wrinkling her nose. “It’s… it is definitely caffeine.”

“I will make you both the best damn cup of coffee tomorrow morning when we’re home,” I promised.

The last few days had been the most frightening and exhausting of my life. But, we’d made it.

Colt was already healing. After they’d gotten the bullet out, everything else had gone smoothly.

Fun fact about Colton, he was a horny unhinged fucker when he was on drugs. When he woke up the first time, he’d asked Sarah if she wanted to ‘take a ride with a cowboy’, which had sent the two of us into a fit of hysteric giggles.

The weather had taken a miraculous swing, which meant we’d been able to see our family. The moment the ice melted enough on the roads, everyone had come by the hospital. Now, the boys were safe at my Mom and Pops with Cam, Haley, Emma, Hunter, and Honey. It was a full house, and exactly what we all needed right now.

David Connor was dead. The Bells killed him after they decided to take revenge due to the murder of the wife’s sister.

I couldn't say I was sorry about that. Maybe it was kind of fucked up, maybe it wasn't, but all of us felt a sense of relief when we’d found out David was gone. Telling the boys had been hard, but I was glad that I could be there to support them when Sarah broke the news.

“I’m ready to be in my own bed. With both of you,” Colt said.

“You won’t be able to do anything,” Sarah laughed. “You literally just got shot.”

“You underestimate me,” Colt protested. “My tongue is working fine.”

I snorted. “You’re an insatiable little slut.”

Colt smirked as he downed the rest of his coffee. “I sure as fuck am.”

I took a sip of coffee and nearly spat it back out. “Oh god. This is awful.”

“Maybe I can bribe Emma into stopping by with real coffee,” Sarah said.

I nodded. “Please.”

Sarah was already texting her. I relaxed in my chair, basking in the sunlight pouring through the window. It was still cold as hell outside, but the ice had melted and central Texas had returned back to normal.

The house was destroyed. That was one problem we still had to figure out, although we had a rough plan. It sounded like Emma was temporarily moving in with Honey and taking over Haley’s old bedroom.

We were all going to be moving into Colt’s house. I’d already been shopping for a larger bed for his room so Sarah, Colt, and I could fit. The second bedroom would be the boys’ while we started construction on a new house. It would be tight quarters for a while, but it would be worth it.

Hunter, being Hunter, was already pulling strings for us to get a builder moving fast. Sometimes it felt like there wasn’t a single problem in the world my older brother couldn’t handle. He always knew someone, always knew what to do. Unless Emma was in the room—then he looked like he was taking a flailing skydive.

“So, tomorrow we’ll get you home. And fed real food. And…”

“And we’ll be together,” Colt said. “We’ll finally just get to be together.”

Sarah smiled and the way the happiness reached her eyes—I could watch her smile that way forever.

I get to make her smile that way forever.
