CHAPTER 1 — Eden —
“By the power vested in me by the State of Colorado, I now pronounce you husband and wife.”
The hundreds of guests gathered to celebrate the happy couple applaud heartily in support of this new union.
“You may now kiss the bride.” The officiant decrees then steps aside.
Cassius James Ford, aka, my father, takes the opportunity to pull his new bride Julia into his arms, bends her over backwards, and proceeds to make a spectacle of their first kiss as husband and wife.
They look happy, I don’t know either of them well enough to have a strong opinion, but I get to my feet together with the rest of the guests and clap for them.
My eyes wander to their wedding party of two, the best man and the maid of honor.
The latter looks gorgeous in a champagne off the shoulder charmeuse gown, with a thigh high slit to match the gold and navy blue wedding theme.
She looks to be the same age as the bride, mid-twenties and very beautiful.
I follow her eyes and they are glued on the best man, who is standing stoically by my father’s side dressed in a navy blue suit and a gold tie.
I have no idea who he is, but he has to be a close friend if my father chose him as his best man.
He stands tall, definitely over six feet with medium-length dark brown hair that is combed away from his face.
His broad shoulders that look like they are carrying the weight of the world, lead up to a thick veiny neck with a prominent Adam’s apple and a strong square jaw, sporting a stubble.
I can only see the side of his face and just as he is about to turn so I can see him fully, my father steps forward, blocking him from my view.
Damn!
Cassius and Julia leave the makeshift altar, followed by their wedding party. I am seated all the way in the back since I arrived halfway through the ceremony, allowing me little to no visibility. As people start leaving I stay behind for a moment, not wanting to get lost in the crowd.
The wedding reception is also right here at one of the banquet halls of Snowy Summit Ski Resort, so once the rest of the guests have cleared out, I make my way there as well.
The resort is located right at the foothills of Aspen mountain, making it a picturesque wedding destination.
However, as someone who was born and raised in LA, it is too cold for me but I will have to get used to it.
As of today, Aspen is my new home. There is no place in LA for me anymore . My whole body aches from the stress of the past couple of weeks, and even though I’d rather be resting, I know that I have to stick it out, at least till I inform my father that I am here.
For once lady luck is on my side, and I don’t have to wait long as I run into him and Julia on their way to the reception, hands clasped together, faces wide with happy smiles.
“Jamie!” Cassius exclaims, as soon as he sees me.
I cringe at the name, and give him a wave. “Hi.”
That’s right, this old man named me after himself.
At least he didn’t force me to be James junior, James the second or something like that.
Jamie is my second name, but he loves calling me that no matter how many times I tell him that I prefer Eden, which is what my mother named me, god rest her soul .
“You’re here, I thought you wouldn’t make it.” He grins, pulling me in for a hug.
I fall into it awkwardly, wrapping my arms around his shoulders. “Me either, but here I am. Congratulations to you both, lovely ceremony.” I compliment, then turn to Julia. “You make the most beautiful bride; I love your gown.”
She gushes, her pearly whites rivaling the snowy slopes on the horizon. “Thank you, I’m so glad you could make it.”
“Me too.” Not really.
I’d have preferred to skip the ceremony altogether, but my flight was scheduled the same day as the wedding, and I realized it was too late to change it.
Right now the only thing I need is sleep, but the looks on the newlyweds faces lets me know that asking to be excused will offend them, so I bite my tongue.
Julia surprises me by taking my hands in hers and giving them a gentle squeeze. “Welcome to Redstone, Eden, you are going to love it here. I look forward to getting to know you better.”
I’m caught off guard since I didn’t expect her to be so warm and gentle.
I guess I’ve watched too many evil stepmother movies, but then again she is only five years older than me.
I don’t expect that we will ever have a normal mother-daughter relationship, I barely have a relationship with my own father, but I do hope we get along since I am stuck here with them for the foreseeable future.
“Me too.”
Her smile gets wider. “Make sure to have fun at the reception, enjoy the food and open bar.”
“She can’t drink yet.” Father dearest chimes in, disapprovingly.
I am quick to protest. “Yes I can, I’m twenty-one.”
“You are?” He asks, his eyes wide in surprise.
See what I mean, he barely knows me.
“Yes.”
He scratches the back of his neck in embarrassment. “Of course you are. I’m sorry, in my eyes you’re still my little girl.”
“Definitely not your little girl anymore.” I retort.
Never have been.
“I can see that, well don’t drink too much then.” He relents, as if I needed his permission in the first place.
The sound of the guests chattering away inside reaches us, and I realize that I am holding them hostage, so I step back and wave them off. “I will do my best, but you better go in now, your guests are getting restless.”
“We’ll see you inside?” Julia asks.
I nod and smile. “Of course.”
She then wraps her arm around my father’s elbow and guides him away from me. At the entrance of the banquet hall they are formally introduced as husband and wife for the first time. Their guests go crazy as they dance their way in. I wait for all the fanfare to die down before walking in myself.
The banquet room is impressive, with crown moldings, large windows, detailed ceilings and impressive light fixtures. I’ve never been to a wedding of this magnitude, so I’m experiencing some things for the first time.
Julia did have my father’s limitless credit card to fund it, so of course, only the best for her. At least they saved on the venue, seeing as my father owns the whole resort.
This is the life I am supposed to get used to?
I feel like Tiana at the ball in, The Princess and The Frog when she had to borrow a dress from Charlotte, after accidentally spilling beignets and sauce on her outfit. I am dressed the part, in a pink A-Line, floor length tulle gown, but I don’t feel like I belong.
I do try my best to mingle, but I don’t know anyone here, so I only end up feeling more out of place.
The food is good, the drinks even better, and the band hired is doing a fantastic job.
I should be having a great time, yet all I can think about is how I want to be back in LA, watching old sitcoms with my mom, cuddled on the sofa under a shared blanket, with popcorn strewn all over from our laughter.
After torturing myself for one more hour, I decide to go outside for some fresh air before I suffocate in here. I see Julia giving me a worried look as I weave my way through her guests, which is the last thing I want. I don’t want her pity or her worry. I just want the pain to stop.
It’s freezing outside and I am not wearing a coat, but I welcome the kiss of the cold, as it momentarily distracts my heart and brain from the pain.
The resort grounds are beautiful and perfectly lit with fairy and bright garden lights.
I follow a random path that ends up leading to a gazebo.
I am eyeing the porch swing there, hoping to sit down and get off my feet for a few minutes, before I head back inside.
The solitude I was hoping for is ruined when I find someone else there.
He was hidden behind the vines that are woven intricately all around the gazebo.
His back is turned to me so I can’t see his face, his broad shoulders trapped under his white shirt speak volumes.
Looks like I’m not the only one seeking some alone time.
I am about to walk away and leave him be, when something catches my eye.
“You’re not allowed to smoke here.” I express in distaste, as I eye the Marlboro clasped between his fingers.
He turns around at the sound of my voice, and holy shit was I not ready for the fine specimen that he is.
I’ve never been into Greek Mythology, but this man right here has just made me a believer.
His striking looks are clearly the work of the gods, from his perfectly chiseled jaw and crooked nose, that seems like it’s been broken and then fixed multiple times, giving him a rugged, edgy look, to his bushy eyebrows, long eyelashes, and thick curly hair that was probably once slicked back but is now a mess from running his fingers through it too much.
“Oh yeah, says who?” He rasps out, and if I wasn’t already besotted by his looks, then his voice would have done it for me.
It’s deep, low and erringly calm. His raspy undertone almost seems unnatural, until I recall what he’s holding. I point at the no-smoking sign, recalling his question.
He doesn’t even turn to look, his eyes trained on me with the curiosity one would give a stray cat. “Who’s going to stop me?” He challenges.
I despise smokers with a passion, and do not advocate for the cancer causing, life-shortening sticks. “I am.” I declare proudly.
The corners of his lips twitch with what I think is a smile. Is he laughing at me?
“Who are you, the smoking police?”
I roll my eyes at his poor attempt to mock me. “Very funny, now give it here.” I demand, holding my hand out.
“No.”
“I said give it.” I insist.
“No.”
I am not letting this go, so I take him by surprise and snatch it away from him, tossing it onto the ground. He glares at me murderously, but my mission is complete.
No one smokes in my presence and gets away with it.
