Chapter Twenty-Five

I fought tears .

He left. During sex .

I didn’t care who the call was.

I was on a Preston Vos emotional roller coaster, and insecurity warred with exhaustion—all of it holding in weariness, trapping me with pinprick reminders that poked through my tenuous hold on sanity like fabric tacked down with pins. Every time I moved in any emotional direction, I got stuck with another needle of doubt.

Was he really going to walk away after the way he’d touched me? I sucked in a sharp breath and quickly dried off. I couldn’t breathe through that thought. I couldn’t think about it.

My son and his safety.

That’s what was important.

Wrapping the towel around me tight, I walked out of the bathroom.

Standing in the kitchen in a towel, Ty was on the phone. “I’ll let her know.” He watched me walk to the dresser and unzip my bag. “You can tell her tomorrow.”

He was talking about me.

“Thanks.” Preston’s gaze shifted. “Afghanistan was a long time ago.” Pause. “Two-way street.” He glanced at the clock in the kitchen. “What I like is irrelevant… No.” His eyes on me, he made no pretense of not staring. “Not sure I can.”

My stomach a mess, my heart breaking, my resolve to stay strong diminishing by the second, I didn’t bother going into the bathroom to change. He’d already seen my body, my scar. I threw on a tank top and yoga pants and put my hair up in a messy, wet bun before crawling into his bed next to my son. His scent assaulted me, and I almost burst into tears.

“And you’re endorsing that?” he asked whoever was on the other end of the call.

I shamelessly listened to his side of the conversation.

Preston’s voice quieted. “Seven years you blamed me for Rollins’s death. One argument and all’s forgiven?”

My back stiffened. He was talking to Ty.

“Would you have wanted to hear it?” he asked into the phone. “We both made mistakes.”

They were talking about Sam.

“Done,” he clipped. “Understood… I’ll let her know in the morning that her car is here… Yes.”

Looking over my shoulder, I caught a glimpse of Preston as he hung up his cell phone. Quickly looking away, I pretended to be asleep before he caught me.

A few moments later, the lamp near the couch was turned off.

I was surrounded by the intoxicating scent of a man who said he was done with me right before giving me the best orgasm of my life. Life mocking me, I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep.
