Chapter Twenty-Two
Kai
Idrop off my griffon to a melee. I like melees just fine, just not when my princess is in the middle of one.
As I slash at a solider, two more turn to join him. I pull fire to my left hand as I step inward to get past one’s block.
To the right of me, I see Lilac, flowers sprouting in her wake. I grin wildly. She only drops magic like that when she’s pissed.
A guardsman in Monkwick colors joins the fray.
When his pike turns to me, I loose my magic.
As he bursts into flame, Lilac’s halberd cuts him down, ending his misery.
Another guard swipes at her head with an axe and she ducks, losing her leather helm.
I run the Fae through with my sword, spinning as I remove my blade from his body and taking down one of the soldiers.
I see Ollie dodge and rage fills me. There is a line of soldiers between us but I see the glare of a blade.
She drops, sweeping her leg in an arch. I cannot even spare the time to be impressed as the Fae falls to the ground, because instead of running, I can see a glimpse of her climbing on top of this person.
I throw my magic wildly, trying to get through to her. “Oleander!” I scream, sword dropping another Fae.
Vale is flapping towards us but surely can’t let his lightning out in this close quarters mess.
Almost, I think, my hand filling with flames again. Just one line of Fae between me and my mate.
The scene is filtered, various Fae cutting between us, but I can see Ollie on a downed guardsman, hand dripping with her magic.
Suddenly, he pulls off his helmet, revealing sweat-dampened black hair and he screams, “No! Don’t! I’m a son of Gaeba. Don’t harm me!”
Ollie hesitates.
Of course she does. Of course my baby, with her big heart, hesitates.
Lonan yells from somewhere on my left, “They’re dead! They all died!” His blade slashes, caught between an opponent and Ollie.
I’m too far.
Lonan is too far.
Vale is too far.
