Chapter 1 The Dream

Tessa Johnson had spent most of her life taking care of other people.

As a night nurse at Piedmont Hospital, she was used to long shifts, aching feet, and putting the needs of strangers before her own.

Most nights she moved through the hospital halls with a gentle smile, checking vitals, changing IV bags, comforting frightened patients, and saying silent prayers for people she barely knew.

But lately, she had barely been holding herself together.

A month ago, her entire world shattered.

Tessa had come home early after a sixteen-hour shift, exhausted and dreaming of nothing more than a hot shower and much needed sleep.

Instead, she found her boyfriend Anthony in bed with her now ex-best friend, Nicole.

The memory still makes her chest burn.

The look of guilt on Nicole's face.

The panic in Anthony's eyes.

The way neither of them could even speak.

Three years of loving and trusting him.

Ten years of childhood memories and friendship with her.

Destroyed in a single moment of lust in her house.

Since then, loneliness has become her constant companion.

At thirty-two, Tessa was beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, and successful. Her thick curves filled every room she entered with quiet confidence, even though lately she had started feeling invisible.

Anthony's final words haunted her.

"Maybe if you lose more weight..."

As if her size had somehow justified his betrayal.

As if she wasn't enough.

Tessa rolled over in bed one rainy Tuesday morning and stared up at the ceiling.

Lord, why does this hurt so much?

Eventually exhaustion claimed her and she fell fast asleep.

Hours later she was dreaming.

She was standing inside Piedmont Hospital.

The white halls were empty.

Everywhere lights flickered softly overhead.

A man was lying alone in a hospital bed.

Machines beeped quietly beside him.

His face was shadowed.

She couldn't see who he was.

But she felt something pulling her toward him.

He looked so lonely.

So broken.

As if he had spent his entire life carrying burdens by himself.

Tessa walked toward him.

The closer she got, the more her heart ached.

"You can't leave yet," she whispered.

The man's chest barely moved.

She reached for his hand.

The moment their fingers touched, his eyes opened.

Piercing blue eyes.

Eyes full of pain.

Eyes she'd never seen before.

Then she woke up.

Her heart was pounding.

The clock read 2:17 PM.

Rain tapped against her bedroom window a little harder.

Tessa sat up slowly.

"What kind of dream was that?"

She rubbed her face.

Then bowed her head to say a prayer.

"Lord, whoever that man is, please help him. Heal him completely please God."

The prayer felt strange.

She didn't even know him.

Yet somehow she couldn't shake the feeling that it mattered.

A few moments later she lay back down.

Eventually sleep returned to her.

She had no idea that seven days later, the man from her dream would arrive at her hospital fighting for his life. And she had no idea that helping him would change both of them forever.

Across town, Jamison Edwards stared out the floor-to-ceiling window of his downtown office.

The city sparkled beneath him.

Most people would have envied his life.

At thirty-eight, Jamison was worth millions.

Luxury properties.

Private investments.

A fleet of cars and homes all over the world.

He had influence, power, and lots of success.

He possessed everything people spent their lives chasing.

Everything except peace.

His employees feared him.

Business rivals respected him.

Women wanted him badly and he used them when he needed to be physically satisfied.

Family members called when they needed money.

Nobody truly knew him.

And he preferred it that way.

Trust was dangerous.

It makes people vulnerable.

He had learned that lesson years ago and trusted no one.

Now he kept everyone at arm's length.

It was safer.

Lonelier.

But safer.

At 9:45 PM he finally shut down his laptop.

The office floor was empty.

Everyone else had gone home hours ago.

Good.

Jamison preferred silence.

He grabbed his jacket and headed toward the private parking deck.

The elevator doors opened.

His expensive Italian shoes echoed against the concrete.

A few moments later he reached his black Rolls-Royce.

Then he heard footsteps.

Fast footsteps as if someone was running behind him.

Jamison turned two minutes too late. Pain exploded through his side. He looked down.

A knife had struck his side.

Someone had stabbed him.

The second man appeared.

His briefcase hit the pavement.

His vision blurred.

A voice shouted to get his wallet, watch, and phone.

Then Jamison felt another sharp pain as he collapsed.

The last thing he saw was the cold concrete rushing toward him.

Then darkness.

Nearly twenty minutes later, a homeless man named Walter cut through the parking garage looking for a place to sleep like he always did after hours.

Found him lying on the concrete half dead with blood everywhere.

On the expensive suit and car.

He thought this rich man was barely breathing what am I going to do.

"Oh Lord Please Help Me."

Walter sprinted towards the main entrance.

There was a payphone standing outside the convenience store down the street. He dialed 911.

And unknowingly would save that man’s life.

Three hours later surgeons fought to save Jamison Edwards.

By sunrise, the man from Tessa's dream lay unconscious in ICU.

Waiting.

Though neither of them knew it yet.

Waiting for her.
