EPILOGUE
Sam
I could watch him sleep forever.
Terran, our happy baby.
He liked to sleep with his thumb in his mouth. And as he dreamed, the plants in the house almost danced. They loved him. He adored them. He would grab their leaves and stroke them gently. He understood them, and they grew for him unlike they had ever done for me. My place was a jungle. I’m just lucky I had a two-bedroom condo.
He was powerful.
My mother was going to love him and went insane over every picture we sent her. It was a lot to explain, and Hermes gave me permission to tell her the truth. Family always deserves the truth. It was a lot for her to take in, but in the end, all that she cared about was me being happy.
I mean, I'm chopped liver now that she has a grandson. Hermes and I will take him to Oklahoma as soon as we feel it’s safe.
“You watching him sleep again?” Hermes’ strong arms wrapped around me and pulled me against him.
“I could watch him sleep forever.”
“I could too. But I could also watch my husband lying down in my arms forever.”
“It’s not forever. Life is meant to ebb and flow, babe. But we have now.”
“I’d prefer forever.”
“I’d prefer you to stop worrying about the future and focus on the here and now. You have me, and I have you.”
“We have him.”
“Exactly.”
I turned the small lamp off and turned on the small galaxy light that lit his ceiling with colored leaves. He murmured in his sleep and sighed. “He’s…”
“Everything? I know.”
“So are you.”
“As are you. Wanna go to bed?” He raised his eyebrows lasciviously. My body throbbed.
“I am not getting pregnant again. I mean it.” I laughed as I followed him down the hall and to our bedroom.
The phone rang.
“Leave it,” Hermes begged. “Just come to bed.”
“What if it’s an emergency?”
“It better be. It’s bedtime.” Hermes pouted. “It’s my favorite time of the day. You in my arms. Our baby is asleep. Best time of the day.”
“I'm getting the phone.” I picked it up from the bedside table. “Hello?”
“Sam. Good, I was afraid you’d be asleep.” Apollo sighed. “Is my stupid brother there?”
“Yes.” I held the phone out for Hermes. He rolled his eyes. “It’s for you.”
“Who is it?”
“Your brother.”
“Which one?”
“The one you like. He’s a movie star.”
“Uh… Don’t know him,” he teased and took the phone. “This better be good.”
Whatever Apollo said made Hermes' face fall. “Again? Shit. Alright… I know… We’ll come over in the morning.”
He threw the phone back down on the table.
“Told you we shouldn’t have answered it.”
“Is it another prophecy?”
“No… worse. It’s brunch.”
With a smile, he pushed me down on the bed.
We didn’t sleep for hours.
