The Mermaid Inn (Ghost Seekers Inc. UK #1)
Prologue.
Callie
“There’s a call for you,” Sunny stated, bringing my cell to where I sat in our RV.
“Who is it?”
“Said his name is Haunt,” Sunny replied.
The name rang a bell, but I couldn’t place it. Curiously, I took the cell and placed it on loudspeaker.
“You’ve reached Callie Dixon.”
“Callie, I got your number from Chance Michaelson. This is Haunt from the Spirit Chasers MC. I’m president of the club,” the guy said.
The name clicked immediately as soon as he mentioned his club’s name. “You’re the UK equivalent of us,” I said.
Haunt chuckled darkly. “Something like that.”
“You’ve signed a TV deal,” I replied.
“It seems you and Sunny have made it cool for MCs to investigate haunted places. Yeah, we signed a contract, but we’re the real deal, like you guys. My MC has been doing this for fifteen years. But we’ve come across something that we have not encountered before, and it’s getting worse.”
“Okay?”
“We’re investigating the Mermaid Inn in Rye, East Sussex.
My club has done a few investigations here, and usually the Inn is calm, with some activity but nothing that makes the hairs on my arm stand up.
That changed six weeks ago. The owner called us, saying something was wrong.
Things started increasing. There are eight registered ghosts at the Inn, but none cause this amount of trouble.
Poltergeist activity was never something majorly linked to the Mermaid Inn, but it is happening.
“Has another investigation stirred things up?” I asked.
“No. Not for months. This isn’t only affecting staff but also customers, and several guests have been hurt. I took my team in, and my VP walked out with a broken wrist when something heavy fell on him,” Haunt said.
“Shit,” I muttered. That was a bad sign.
“How many times have you been in since this started?”
“We’ve done nine sittings. The last time we recorded a growl. Ain’t gonna lie, that shit me up,” Haunt admitted.
“You thinking demon?”
“We’ve dealt with demons. One of my brothers is an ordained exorcist. Callie, like you, we don’t mess around; this shit is real.
We go in to help people. Yeah, we signed a TV deal, but we needed funding.
In England, activity is amping up. Sometimes we’re all that stands between the dead and the living,” Haunt explained.
Something in Haunt’s voice told me he was genuine. “What do you need?”
“GSI, if that’s possible. I’ve ten years’ experience on you, but you’ve encountered more than me. Together, I think we can solve this before someone dies. And that’s a distinct possibility.”
“I’ll call when I’ve obtained flight times. Send me all the information you have and the Inn's whereabouts. I’ll let you know who’s coming,” I said, and Sunny groaned.
“Thanks, Callie,” Haunt replied and cut the line.
How exciting! I was heading to the Mermaid Inn in East Sussex, England!
